SpyBot is excellent and free and stays resident. Ive noticed no performance hit at all.
Adaware is also good but its not resident unless you buy it.

ZoneAlarm is a good Firewall choice.

Try MacAfee it provides both firewall & antispam and does not take that much resources

McAfee Internet Security? I found that to be extremely slow and drastically slow down boot times, just as bad as Norton Internet Security :(

But McAfee VirusScan is good (without internet security).

    Firewall :- Outpost firewall.

for anti-spam, ... I never have used one, (gmail's spam blocker works perfectly), but I have seen some use Spamihilator.

im using a combination that is free. i use kerio personal firewall, avast antivirus, spywareblaster to help keep spyware off my pc to begin with, and both spybots s&d and adaware for what does get through.

The best firewall is often a hardware one.

If you are on dialup though, Kerio, Outpost etc... are all good. It's probably best to download a couple of them try them out and see which one you like.

Outpost Firewall (low resource use) & Windows Defender (Free, but WGA Protected so you'll have to take measures to circumvent that if you are using an unlicensed copy of Windows).

Zone Alarm is a wonderful firewall with a plethora of features, but not an option on older systems or newer if you're a stickler for performance due to its moderately high system resource usage.

If you have the time to learn it and can set it up then Jetico is tight, but a lot of people seem to give up on it as they can't stand the constant alerts (i.e. Learning mode is always on) and that it's a bit hard to understand and configure.

It's free, not well known but a really good FW (i use it myself). Especially it's outbound control is very good, possibly the best around.

the best kind of firewall is hardware..example a router with a built in firewall...you can't get better than this in terms of firewall...software firewalls are really easy to crack....if you have to use software i woudl recommend blackice...for spam i use a combo of adware and spybot
haven't had any probs so far
