Hi, i am selling a stock i7 cooler on a local ebaylike site, but i want to make sure it is actually compatible with the buyers i5 mobo. He has informed me that he has a MSI h61m-p25 b3 Picture: http://www.msi.com/pic/product/five_pictures6_2450_20110829170827.jpg I have no experience whatsoever with i5, so i hope someone can help me here
^^^ Wrong, if he thinks about seling his Core i7-930 Intel BOX cooler for LGA1366 socket to someone who will use it on some LGA1155 motherboard like MSI H61M-P25 (B3) answer is: No, it will not fit! I'm 100% sure. Some aftermarket CPU coolers have brackets so you can mount them on all sorts of CPU sockets: 775, 1366, 1156, 1155, 1150.... but you can't do that with Intel BOX cooler for LGA 1366 and fit it on LGA 1155 without some kind of modification.
It's socket specific (i3/i5/i7) rather than CPU specific, though some of the higher TDP coolers used to come with thicker coolers to support the increased heat.
