    Q1:

i reinstalled xp home i had to use my friends dell xp system cd with my own compaq xp home cd key. i have had no os related problems.

when i did it left a thing in the start menu to the dell website. i am unable to delete it from the start menu. as u can see in the pic there is no option to delete it.

not sure how my ftp will work to view the picture but all the info for the ftp is in the link.

    Q2:

i have a divx counter-strike skills movie that takes up about 300mb of disk space. the problem is it says that the file is in use but its not. i have rebooted my computer but sill says its in use. i am unable to delete it.

i have 12 critical system processes running that cant be shut off and still cant delete it.

EDIT: got it to delete, i am a 1337 h4x0r now
    Open up Notepad and type

    del "filename.avi"

then save the file as watever.bat - then run this bat file and it should delete the file.

    Q3:

how large of a partion should i create when i install mandrake. i am useing the 3 iso cds to install. to my knowledge mandrake lets u make a partion when u install it, is this correct or do i need like partion magic or other thing to do it.

if anyone can help with any of my questions thanks so much.

I think tweakIU in the XP power tools lets you delete things from the start menu..

Safe mode might have worked also..

saw that option in tweak ui but i think that was for the things on the left side of the start menu. the dell icon is just above the turn off computer option as u can see from the picture.

    any other idea's?

I run SuSe on a 10GB ext2 partition with 512MB swap partition and that is more than enough.

If you're running low on disk space, I would suggest atleast 5 GB space for the personal desktop package...............

    You'll need 3 partitions

    1. /boot..............for booting the kernel, needs 100 MB or more.......

    2. /swap...............used as swap file, as "page file" in windows, depends on the amount of RAM you've got installed.......if you have 256, then 256*2= 512 MB swap file.

    3. /dev/hda***..............this is where u install the OS...............

All you do is make room for a 5GB partition and delete it...........Restart and boot from mandrake CD, let it automatically partition ur hard disk and voila........mandrake will have it settled for you just as you like......

NOTE: remember to check review settings for the partition to have an idea how much space is being used..........

you don't neccesarally need to create /boot
lilo and grub will write themselves to the bootsector, no problem.
Unless you run a server, you won't need more than a 512MB swap.

    thanks for the replys. :D

still no luck with getting that dell thing out of my start menu (not that big an issue just something i would like to get rid of).

i have about 15gig of free space off of a 40gig drive. i was goning to put it at about 7-8 gig just in case i need more for a game or something.

im just to timid right now to attempt an install. i have a few resources to help me (can never have enough for a beginner). anyone have some of your fav's to help install mandrake correctly?

the biggest thing im worried about is messing up windows. is it pretty safe to duel boot on different partitions?

GRUB actually detects the windows partition and installation is pretty straightforward. Good Luck!
