It would be nice if they put the actual size in parens beside the default text in the control panel. Because in the future they may update the default value to something higher and unless you keep up with obscure tech news you wouldn’t know if your manual setting was higher or lower compared to default perhaps. I just prefer when things like this are explicit.

Seems nuts that one game can use more than the entire shader default size wow

I’d like to into Star Citizen at this point as I have buddies that play and love it, but I haven’t kept up with it and don’t even know the best way to buy the game.

Do I need to buy the single player version (squadron?) separate from the multiplayer? To buy access to the multiplayer do I just purchase one ship from them?

Alternatively I could just wait for official release many many years from now. Ideally it would be nice if the game had its Vulkan/dx12 update by then as well as the shader patch and other technical improvements.

That is if they happen at all. I remember when Hunt showdown had moving to Vulkan on their roadmap and then removed it never to be seen again :( No worries by the way if nobody explains the optimal purchasing situation I can do some online reading over the weekend on it I suppose.

Vulkan and DirectX 11/12 are very different. Going from one to the other is almost impossible, I've tried.

Thanks that's good to know. I expect the work required would not be trivial, but I had thought they put moving to the other API on their roadmap sometime ago. Perhaps I'm misremembering.

Squadron is bought separately but can be had included in some of the starter packages (starter package=base multiplayer game+ship of your choice, although only a few ships are available to start with).
Basically you get starter packages of various kinds which vary from 50$ to >1000$, depending on the ship and other bonuses like starter credits plus the inclusion (or not) of squadron.

I started with the base of the base, Aurora starter package for ~50$ because I intend to carve my way through, possibly with hundreds of playing hours while following game developement.

The resets wont make it much fun though if you invest a lot of time.
That is until its released, which might not happen.

it's not impossible, but the api design is vastly different for pure implementations, unfortunately if you're learning vulkan you need to really just try things until it breaks, the documentation is scattered, incomplete and in many cases outdated.

I bought a new avenger titan a few years ago for about 35 bucks, that's all you need really, is a ship and you can pretty much get started exploring, there are lots of missions to be done, bounty hunting, mining, running contraband. Game has never run better than now for me. Don't listen to the haters, they will be here in a few to ...hate.
It's super fun and the $ I spent on it was worth every cent.
