Should this be true, I'll be sticking with my ancient mechanical WD Black Edition hard drives...

    The problem isn't that big.

Check out the temperature table in the attached PDF. Assuming it's true, and just now I have no reasons to think otherwise, yes, you can lose some data in 1 week, but SSD has to be kept in very specific conditions.

    Basically:
    1. If you have some important data, like court proof material, make a backup or even handle a copy @ HDD.
    2. Don't store SSDs without power attached for very long periods of time
    3. If you have to, keep them warm when running and cool when powered off.

At point number one, it's amazing how stupid people can still be in not backing up important data. You would have to be a pretty incompetent to keep just one copy of those documents.

Still, the point remains that SSD's are great for OS's and running programs, mechanical drives are still better for data storage.

Already seen a decent price drop with the 500GB & 1TB drives this past week. Hopefully news like this may slow the sale of ssd's which in turn may bring a significant price drop.

Don't forget, that time range is when the SSD will start to loose single bits. It's not like that after 7 days the enterprise SSD is completely empty with a bang. And also, that's when they might start to lose data, depending on how the manufacturer has built the device.

I like how enterprises play the game. First they manufacture and sell tons of these things, stating it's more reliable than HDDs, and out of nowhere this comes out:D

    Wait, this affects all SSDs?

This is a long shot, but it might explain the fact that my OS and some apps keeps throwing weird errors at times. I've been going on holidays for as much as 2 months in the summer with the home PC unplugged.
It might be a huge coincidence, but when I return there are frequent screwups which occasionally end up with me reinstalling the whole OS. The most recent issue I recall is image thumbnails not displaying properly and video thumbnails not being displayed at all. Though the issue fixed itself.

As I stated: what I described above is a very long shot.

Very interesting. Makes you wonder how mature SSDs really are. But I'm happy for now. Considering my SSD is almost 4 years old and it's still going. Although the OS loading time has degraded massively since when it was new.

No worries, running Norton Ghost 15 twice a week on a Schedule.

I am yet to see this kind of catastrophic failure. But this is only 2nd SSD is have, and 3rd is on the way.
Since I intend to place on new one W10, Old one will not be powered as I have intentionally one hot swap bay disconnected, so I may leave it sit for month just to test if Vertex 4 is somehow affected.

SSDs only for OS/Programs in my usage, couldnt care less if they lose data. Images at the ready when needed. Still, they've been sold in the millions by now, why havent we encountered hordes of angry people in forums coming back from vacation?

I was thinking the same thing. The results would be very interesting to see.
