    From the BBC:

My last foray into Physics was when I did my Physics A-Level back in '1900 and frozen to death' so I'm well out the loop, pardon the pun!

Yeah this has set the internet ablaze. I hope its true, it would mean big implications for the scientific world. We've essentially lived the last 100 years assuming the theory of general relativity was perfect.

Mmmm I wouldn't say so. It explains and predicts a lot of things in the Universe, but can't explain others at quantum levels, where other models must be used. That's why the Unified Theory is the holy grail of physics.

It may be an illusion, i remain hopeful though.

    faster than light neutrinos

Einstein didn't say things couldn't "go" faster than light. "go" faster relative to what exactly?

It boils down to speed of information. It might be feasible that the neutrinos in this experiment did "arrive" quicker than expected, but if they were different "which is what the experiment was looking at" then the chances are, there is a breakdown of information transfer - so no laws are being broken.

Ie - the neutrino hasn't travelled faster than the speed of light, it is a different entity when "it" arrives - but "it" isn't "it" any more, if you get my drift.

The only way they could truly prove this law has been broken is by sending some sort of morse code message via this neutrino pulse. That way, information could be sent faster than light, and this is silly. So I'll wait for that to happen before I start eating my hat.

It already did, you will send an FPS increasing tachyon wave when it becomes available. It will travel back through time and increase your FPS to what you already experienced. Yes your FPS would have been even lower otherwise. :wanker:

Tachyon based computer experience in general. Just stream all the data as tachyons backwards through time to your current and relatively ancient computer, the one in the future will be doing all the work. Lulz.

You'd get arrested because the actresses of the future aren't 18 yet now. That's how strict the laws are. :wanker:

Nope, religious persons have been actively hoping it would be superseded by something else. If the speed of light is altered then that would not only mean a chance to deal with starlight but it would also impact radiometric dating techniques. :p

eta: that said I doubt the result, though I'm obviously hopeful

So because the fastest car in the world has not yet been beaten, that means there can never be a faster car discovered ?

Light is going to take some serious horse power to beat, but doesn't mean it won't one day be beaten.

    My 2 cents anyway.

    Sweet Validation

Lindemann's book "Bending The Ruler" has been a point of contention in some inner circles because it defies conventional wisdom. He predicted that the speed of light can be exceeded. if interested I think it can be picked up at a site with the name of the book bendingtheruler.com

Imagine the implications of this. Every physics book printed since the early ninteen hundreds is inaccurate! This is really going to mess with the heads of so many scientists.

As he put it in his book almost everything in science is based on the constancy of light. If light is variable then what of pop science?

Keep thinking open everyone or we too may get stuck in the mire of complacent thinking!

This beats blowing a chunk out of the planet...

Edit: maybe this was the real reason behind rebooting the LHC...
