Sonic CD is coming to all major platforms (except Nintendo)

Today we are happy to announce that Sonic CD will debut on mobile phones and consoles everywhere! Originally released for the SEGA CD system in 1993, and included the first appearance of fan favorite characters Metal Sonic and Amy Rose. Big news for fans everywhere, Sonic CD is coming to digital platforms with music from the original Japanese soundtrack. The beloved prequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I is coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, iPhone and iPod touch, iPad, PC Digital Download, Android, and Windows Phone! Best of all, Sonic CD will be available for download in late 2011!

Following the classic story of the original, Sonic CD sees Dr Eggman plan to cause chaos and take control of the future by stealing Time Stones from the Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time while fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones, and save Amy Rose from his mechanical twin, Metal Sonic! This fast-paced game will return with brand new features including enhanced widescreen graphics, special iOS features, Xbox LIVE Achievements, PSN Trophies, PC Achievements and more.

Looks like this Sonic CD port uses the Retro Engine from the Sonic Retro user "The Taxman", looks like he's helping SEGA with this port.

Yeah, the camera is also tied into the spindash you choose. You pick one game style or the other. Anyway, I think I've said to much since I'm not the one meant to be marketing this!

Again, yes! Basically you either play it Sonic CD style, or Sonic 2/3k physics rules (with spindash and camera setting). The only Sonic CD trait that carries over both styles is the no roll jump lock. Oh and Sonic's skidding has dust [/nerd features].

OK, we're kind of straying into the "talking too much" territory. I'll just answer this generally and leave it at that.

Certain obvious things have been improved, and some other things have been left alone in order to keep Sonic CD's flavour.

Overall, there's some cool stuff and I guess at this point the best thing to do is to watch for some coverage at PAX. It's up to SEGA's community and marketing heroes to provide the further details.

^^ I do find it funny that Sonic Retro is allowed to flourish, and yet the Streets of Rage remake was forced to shut down [After they released though, so its on the internet for good ]
