I have no idea how 3dmark scores are weighted, I'm talking about AotS, a game in which there's is virtually no geometry being processed :p

In theory at 1466MHz the 480 will match the 980Tis 2816 SPs @ 1200MHz, if in practice it does not then it is being held back by something

Sue nvidia because your 1080 throttles down to ONLY 125% of the base clock! "Someone owes me 100 mhz!"

no way a 20% overclock will elevate a 970+ to 980ti performance. Not going to happen. Over 980 performance, yes, but the gap to the 980ti is massive.

I don't believe it will either, but it can, in theory

can you explain your math behind it?

I've never seen a gpu gain 5k gpu score in Fire Strike purely via a 200mhz overclock. Not going to happen.

    And some Sapphire NITRO clocks:

    1600MHz/2250MHz !!

So then it will OC up to 1800mhz, this will be even more possible to catch up stock 980ti & gtx1070

    Oh it's simple.

The "shaders" in the GPU are actually the so called execution units, those parts of the chip that actually do the math.

Since Fermi, and since GCN on AMD's side if I'm not mistaken, GPUs can do two operations, namely addition+multiplication, in one instruction; Fused Multiply-Add, and each unit can process one of these instructions per second.

This defines, totally, the theoretical compute throughput of a processor. If I have a super convenient (for this discussion, not for performance!) GPU with exactly 2000 shaders, or SPs, or ALUs, or EUs, running at exactly 1000mhz, then it is a 4tflop machine. 2000 x 2 (FMA) x 1000 = 4,000,000

That said, a GPU with a higher theoretical compute throughput does not necessarily perform better, because other things could be holding it back from actually processing 4 trillion operations per second. How far they hold back the actual computing can make a card with a lower power on paper, outperform a card with higher power on paper; 980Ti vs Fury X

    ~6600 gflops vs 8600

    I don't think G5 goes up to 10GHz

    Maybe its a G5x?

    lol, 10ghz on gddr5, legit.

then it's clearly a typo, meaning we can ignore a site that can't get the spec right.

1600/10000 seems eerily similar to the 1080's 1607/10000 base clock don't you think.

I'm fairly certain 10GT/s GDDR5 doesn't exist though; 1070's are using the highest specced G5 available and they golden ones overclock to about 9400-9500

Companies (like people) can learn from their **** ups. It's entirely possible that they keep this as low key as possible and they want the numbers and the price/performance ratio to do the talking. That's not so weird. NVIDIA showed 2.1GHz on a founder's edition cooler at 60c. Every single review will show you that that number is simply dishonest (bull**** is another way to put it). So, guess what, it's possible for both companies to do something right (Maxwell, low-key Polaris release), and something bad (stupid Fury X promises, 970/Pascal clocks).
Well, in the end the thing I'm most curious about is attainable performance with these. If they are much more efficient than "usual" GCN, they will be scary.

If it clocks 25% higher than stock, and performance increases linearly with clock it will justifiably sell like hotcakes.

It will even if it's on the low end of the expectations.

I am eagerly looking forward to 480 as replacement for my 7950s. Might be a bit of downgrade, but I think it will be enough to keep me and the wallet happy until vega shows up.

Moving from 2 gpus to 1 is always a good idea, waiting for vega is undoubtedly a good idea for everyone's wallets, even if you're leaning towards a 1080
