Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on
other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of
1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats,
in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions
of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
    Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in
battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
    and noble undertaking.

    SIGNED: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Remembering a great day for the USA, Britain,France, Canada, Australia, and "Liberty loving people" across the globe.

    My thanks are sincere
    My flag flying proudly
My hope is that nobody ever forgets

I was hoping a thread like this was going to show up. I was going to make one.

Today is the anniversary of D-Day. The military operation that allowed the U.S. and its Allies to gain a foothold into Nazi-occupied Europe at the cost of 10,000 soldiers. Portrayed in films like "Band of Brothers" and "Saving Private Ryan," these men paid the ultimate price to set the gears turning to end Nazi Germany's stranglehold over Europe and its people.

    *salutes*

People do not understand what courage it takes to jump out of a perfectly good airplane into enemy held territory. To step of a relatively safe ship willingly and try to storm a fortified beach.

We shall always remember their sacrifices.

What about the German soldiers? Or the civilians who suffered the most? Btw did you guys know more civilians died in the 2nd WW than soldiers.

Thanks for posting that. Being in the army and most of my FB friends also in the military, my FB lights up on days like today. Both my grandfathers fought in WW2 in different capacities (one was a paratrooper for the Brits, and the other a cook for the Canadians), and they both survived. Others were not so lucky, but all of them will NEVER be forgotten. *salute*

I lost a grandfather on Omaha Beach too.I'm not sure I'd have been born had he lived, but he was my grandmother's first husband.I'll always know him as my Grandpa, the hero.
I was US Army as well.Thank you sir, for your service. As bad as things were when I was in, I know I had a cake walk compared to my forefathers in arms.

My Grandpa was on the USS Missouri and those years identified him for the rest of his life. I will always remember him as a Sailor and a Patriot; may he rest in peace.

    Remembering : yes.

But celebrating is in my opinion an insult to the memory of all who suffered.

So the hard thing is to remember what people don't want to remember and why.

Just because a handful of people of a country does something bad doesn't mean you should dismiss the death of suffering of other people of that country.

Uh, my topic was about D-Day, it wasn't just one side who lost people/soldiers, I was merely pointing that out.

I think you may have missed the entire point. It's not about "celebration". It's about the memories of those whom have suffered, gave their lives for, and whom appreciate the sacrifices of others for the pursuit of overcoming an unspeakable evil. I think either you are trolling or mis-understood the sentiments.

I lost neither of my grand fathers. One was in the German submarines and the other was in the Finnish artillery. Both were fighting against Allies. Oh the irony. Soviets with other allies...

I know, and we must also remember that the allies sacrificed lives for the better good, we didnt want the war, ask for the war or appreciate the loss of life, we just did what had to be done. My paternal grandfather was in the army in europe and my maternal in the navy in the pacific.

LOL Handful of people? Hitler was where he was cuz german ppl wanted it to be that way. If the people of germany wasnt absolutely (by majority) convinced that Hitler was right, then he wouldnt have had conquered almost all Europe.

Its not like they stole the goverment and started to do crazy things. He raised to that position by the support of the people. And the people were convinced bout Hitlers view of things.

When you take a resentful population like Germany was wafter WWI, then you can do disasters. It was a disaster approved by the people nonetheless.
