With Sam4 being the first game in the timeline, they are making an effort to add depth to the story.
The writers behind the Talos Principle handled the story here.

After playing Serious Sam 2 recently, I wish they didn't go for the more realistic art style. Sam is whacky and so are the enemies. I miss the ridiculous colours of SS2 and the other games. The environments they've show so far just look boring, brown and drab. :( Still gonna buy the game though.

it was too whacky for some. I liked it though but silliness was out of the roof.

    I didn't like Serious Sam 2.
Almost everything was worse than the First and Second Encounters.
And it wasn't just the wackyness. Combat, graphics, sound, it was all inferior to other Serious Sam games.

I played it when it came out, but quit after a couple of hours, simply because I wasn't having any fun.
This year I made a play trough on all serious sam games, and I had a blast.
But when I got to SS2, I just gave up after another couple of hours.

And truth be told, even Croteam kind of gave up on this game as well.
All Serious Sam games have been imported to Fusion, except SS2. This was in part because this game uses a slightly different engine, but also because there isn't interest in gamers to justify the investment.

And Fusion is an amazing way to play the Serious Sam games. With Vulkan performance is amazingly good.

Amazing video and I love how cobbled together their tech is.

Serious Sam 2 was force to be what it was, croteam didn't intend for it to come out that way, whoever published it, I think, was who forced them to make it different. I liked it. Serious Sam 2nd encounter and Serious Sam 2 are my favorites of the series. This one looks exactly part part 3 to me. Even graphically it's underwhelming which is odd for croteam.

Croteam are not happy with Serious Sam 2.
2K forced a lot of changes to the visuals and overall design of Sam 2, hoping to make the game a "console success".

Kind of agree they have to keep things silly, but overall I wasn't a fan of SS2. The first 2 encounters felt silly, yet "contained" in a way that didn't cross any borders where I felt it was overdone. The new title, we'll see, but I do feel like they lost some of their original style.

It was good back then but I would not play such an revived/ancient shooter again.

I liked First Encounter, Second Encounter and also BFE.

BFE's beginning is a bit drab compared to previous games but it gets better later on. It's obvious the early parts are recycled from the modern military shooter Croteam was making but got canned.

Personally don't mind the reloading of some weapons either, managing your reloads amid hectic combat can be part of gameplay skill.
ADS with AR also helps shoot at farther targets.

SS 4 looks like amalgamation of BFE, FE and SE with some new twists and that's fine by me.

    Addendum:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! *kaboom*

    Serious Sam 2 is great.
Honestly, I've enjoyed every title in the series. Sam3 starts off a bit weak, taking too long to get going... but it is still fun.

So you need a 8core to see some silly scripted animation at the beginning and then at the end of the game?

Not to mention low texture popups and missing textures and stuck ai and what not..

Guess I rather replay SS3 then.
