I'm searching for a new set of headphones and I've stumbled on the sennheiser hd 215. these are pretty much as far as I'm willing to go with the cost, but I'm wondering if it's overkill to buy them just for gaming, movies and music?
they seem more focused on dj's, musicians and studio use.

it's so hard to find good affordable headphones.

my only demands are good positional sounds and comfort(cover ears instead of resting on them).

I currently use the HD555 and i had switched from the 215. Overkill? not by a mile.
The 215 is fairly low end compared to the good true overkill stuff.
I liked the 215's while i had them because i was recommended them but in the end I needed something better. That being said the 555's are miles better and not just because they are far more comfortable than the 215's.
Go within your budget but get something comfortable.
    *fixed 555 lol*

I got the Sennheiser PC 350 headset just recently, and boy let me tell you...WOW!!! The sound is so rich, and my buds in TS2 couldn't believe how different I sounded. They said it sounded richer, more real than my Plantronics set. My Plantronics set wasn't a cheapo set either, was a 50 dollar gaming class.

I've had a pair of the sennheiser 280's for about a year now and have yet to be disappointed. You really can't go wrong with sennheiser (unless you want a HEADSET, then there are some better alternatives).

I do ultimately want a headset but from what I've seen on various forums the majority of people seem to think that's it's better to get a real set of headphones and get the zalman clip-on mic instead of a "gamer headset".

That because it is better to go with a real pair of headphones and use a clip on mic. As so called gamer headsets tend to be on the low quailty set and called their self gaming heasets for marketing.

well, as a bit of an audiophile ( a bit because my wife wont let me spend the amounts I want ;) ) I have to say go grado sr60.
The price difference, according to my wee check online, is negligible.
But the sound difference is IMMENSE.
IMO, the sr60 are just the best bang for buck headphones out there.
I have at home 2 senheiser, 3 sonys, pioneer and the grado, and it puts them to shame.

Games sounds very crisp and correct on them and music is just sweet.
    my 5/5 rating.

    Noam

PS: Also, google grado sr60 reviews. It says it all :)

I looked at the grado's earlier but unfortunately they are not sold in my country and they appear to be resting on your ears which is not good for long gaming sessions. This I know from my current sennheiser pc 150's.

I'm having a really hard time time settling on what to buy, whenever I think I've finally found the right ones I find something negative about them and the search continues.
And the more picky I get, the higher the price goes :(

    Tell me about it.
Nobody brings in grados to Israel either. I had to buy them from a private importer.
    Cost me 50% more :(
And as for the money, honestly, the super expensive ones are really over priced.
I didnt really hear a different between a good 70$ pair and a 400$ pair.
Maybe the 4000$ pairs are different *Checks wallet*
    :)

555's here too. Awesome sound quality! Had them a few years now and I've had to tape the left and right silver plastic where the arms come out because I kept falling asleep with them on watching films in bed :p

    Anyone found a sleep-proof pair of head-phones?

Haven't fallen asleep with them yet but I think the Beyerdynamic DT 231 Pro I have could probably withstand that, they seem to be more sturdy than the Sennheiser HD 595 I have :p

That all depends on the source/amplifier you use though.. if you were using an Audigy 2 with 70$ headphones and 400$ headphones I'm not surprised you couldn't tell a difference.

I haven't used them in years, not since I bought my first ministry of sound closed-back. I like my cans :)
