Selecting GPU scaling removes 120hz and locks 60hz

    Hi,

I have heard it's best to select GPU scaling (perform scaling on GPU) in the drives but when I do it locks the screen to 60hz and offers only below, removing 120hz. I have a 1440p 120hz display.

    GPU is 6700xt.

I am fairly new to all this having just got my 5800X3D and 6700XT the last couple of days and having a slew of problems.

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers.

    That is indeed the case.
Do not use GPU scaling for HRR.

Monitors (and TV's) today have very good quality in-built upscaling, so there is really no need for GPU scaling, unless you want to play some retro game in pixel-perfect mode, in which case you don't need more than 60 fps and GPU scaling is fine.

But if the display's upscaler adds too much latency, you're screwed. Also, 60Hz is not recommended even with 60FPS games if you use g-sync/freesync as it has more latency.

    This is great, much appreciated.

I see you acknowledge TV's - I am using the Samsung nu8000 and encountering some issues with FreeSync Ultimate - issues I do not have on Xbox Series X.

Worth asking - when I first launch a game in Fullscreen it feels like it's locked the refresh rate to 60 (again!) despite clearly showing 120hz 120FPS.

If I set to borderless mode, it's smooth again. Then back to Fullscreen and it's buggered again.

The only way to get Fullscreen to work is to disable game mode on my TV (which disables Freesync) then turn game mode back on and the game is perfect - fullscreen with VRR on 120hz.

EDIT I just tried istead of switching game mode off/on switching freesync to basic, that also worked, seems any change - game mode on/off, freesync from ultimate to basic, back again etc)

Honestly fk all this crap not worth the insane money.

All this stuff is so close to being sent back because I am having nothing but issues and complexities and odd occurrences for 2 days straight.

I have performed a Format last night with no results.

Any thoughts would be VERY appreciated. I just don't know what else to do.

VRR is of course enabled in Windows and Adrenalin (when game mode is on, when game mode is off on my TV it auto disables it in Windows and Adrenalin ofc)

If I minimize the game and then maximize it again, it's buggered again, despite saying 120FPS and 120hz. It feels like it's all stuttery and running in 30FPS - until I disable game mode and enable it again.... This is a nightmare.

The best way to know if you actually have 120 fps is to move the mouse (or a simple window like Calculator) on the screen, and try to "feel" the difference between 60 and 120.

It might be the TV might not actually be capable of 120, despite the input being 120, and it just drops every other frame.

That seems like a good TV, but sometimes they cheap out on input circuitry...

You definitely NEED game mode on a TV, otherwise all the internal image processing is active and it introduces a ton of lag !
Keep it on 100% of the time on the TV.

As for stuttering... This is how I play also on a 4K 120Hz TV:

In game, I just use Vsync on older games that can maintain 120, or triple buffering or simply "nothing special" in other games.
    It works pretty well.

Note: Windows is in HDR more, as I have an OLED and it looks wonderful !

    Hope this helps.

p.s. Make sure the connection is actually 4K 120 !

G.Pixel Clock needs to be that value over 1 million... if it's not, try another HDMI cable, some are really crappy and can't sustain the 1.1 ghz pixel clock.

I had to try 3 until I found one that was stable. The others just kept crapping out and the GPU was randomly resetting the connection to 60Hz with a short black screen. It might be that's what you're experiencing as well.

Oh sorry my nu8000 is a 1440p 120 display with FreeSync Ultimate range being 48-120hz. Thanks a lot for the reply I will switch out the HDMI cable anyway just as a shot in the dark.

Sadly different HMDI cables yield no results, the exact same behaviour persists.

I have to switch game mode or freesync on and off or it's a mess.

    I give up.

Does freesync work in borderless window?

Depends on the game. Usually no. But you can use Special K to force flip model presentation in borderless windowed mode, which should make freesync work.

FreeSync not working with borderless was fixed a few years ago

Yeah Freesync works in borderless mode.

To me it sounds like your TV needs a firmware update. Alternatively try a high bandwidth good quality DisplayPort cable if your TV has a DP input.

Last try unplugging all other sources except the PC, I've had issues in the past with VRR if multiple sources are connected with some displays.
