Right now I'm using a PC with a terrible motherboard and a dated CPU. I was planning on Buying a new mobo and CPU along with some storage (SSD) and a case. I was planning on carrying over my RAM (2x4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 @1600Mhz), GPU (msi GTX 970 OC), PSU (Corsair CX500), fan cooler (Noctua NH-D14), optical drive and storage. For the motherboard I was thinking of a Gigabyte GA Z97 gaming 5 and for the CPU an i5 4690k. But today my friend told me he's selling his Asus Z77 Sabertooth with his i7 3770k. This would be at €350 compared to roughly €380-390 for the i5 combo. My biggest gripe is that he won't sell it without the RAM, which is 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance Platinum at 1866Mhz, for which he wants another €150, upping the price to €500. Which makes the total €110-120 more expensive to me. I can see the benefit of higher RAM refresh rates for things like video rendering. The only heavy tasks I put on my PC is playing triple A games. It seems to me that it would hardly make a difference while gaming, so it seems to me like it would be a waste of money. I compared the benchmarks, and it seems like the 4690k has slightly better single core performance, but the 3770k scores higher overall because of the hyperthreading. But since the most multitasking I will do is browsing the internet while a game is running on the background, I don't think it's necessary. So the question is if it's a good idea to go with the second hand route, or should I stick with my original plan? Thanks everyone!
Without the RAM it's a good deal get more threads incase games do start using more in the future from consoles. When overclocked both will produce similar frame rates so i'd just get which ever is cheapest personally.
It is not a bad deal if he sells you without the RAM, but it isn't that great a deal either. Have you checked what these things cost used in your area?
