Ugh. HDDs just need to die already. If half the effort was put into increasing NAND density on SSDs as is put in to keeping shitty dinosaur tech like HDDs alive we would be far enough along now where HDDs would be dead, buried, totally obsolete and unnecessary. We are getting to a point where even as just mass storage HDDs no longer are sufficient, just look at how long it takes to clone one mechanical drive to another for instance it's the PCI bus all over again.
Most of my storage is hard drive. Using SSDs for security recording, game backups and offline storage is a waste and are not as safe when theres a problem. I only buy WD helium (since they bought HGST) and am very happy using these drives. No failures at all, my 2 oldest HGST 1TB drives still work well with ridiculous hours on the clock. Only one HGST 4TB drive had a problem when the CPU overheated but was recovered and still works great. Other than that, zero issues. Though its going to be some time before I need another drive since getting an 18TB last year. Anyway, thats my anecdote on why reliable HDDs still have a good place here.
