A chronic firmware problem is triggering failures in Seagate's current-generation Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives according to owners in the company's forums NewEgg buyers and elsewhere. The disk series...

Glad I blew the money the money on my new Velociraptor. Given the Vista and game level boot times, worth every penny.

That sounds an awful lot like Creative's method of trying to squelch driver complaints if they are indeed ignoring commenting and deleting workarounds.

Sounds bad. I built my friend's computer with one and was thinking of picking up another for myself. It's just a high rate of failure, not a matter of time, right?

I remember Finchwizard posting quite a while back that WD's have bad reliability. Wondering if that's the case now...

Having ~10% HDD space left on my computer really vexes me. :(

It's normal. Software companies and HD companies measure drive space differently. Also when you format the drive you create a "table" that is on the drive that also uses space.

I'm not sure on the exact terminology so don't quote me on that. :p

I've had no issues with my Raptors. I have a 74GB Raptor as my secondary drive and a new 300GB Velociraptor as my primary and they are both working to spec. My level load times in my games are simply incredible with this Velociraptor.

Guess i misunderstood the question. If you hardrive is filled near it's capacity, then it will take a huge performance hit.

Back on topic, i hope seagate sorts out what ever is going on at there plants (or software). :/

no warning whatsoever, my system just froze and the drive cannot be recognized by the system. both failed after less than a month. the 2 replacement drives (refurbished) ones havent failed yet though and its been 3 months ..yikes

I'm still convinced that WD ship all their bad Hard drives to Australia.

    Within the last 10 years.

I've had about 5 or 6 Raptor drives fail. And at LEAST 50 WD normal hard drives fail in machines, servers, you name it.

Seagates on the other hand, I think I've had 2 die in the last 15 years or so. Just don't get them nearly as much.

It just shows how unreliable the hard drive is, always a good idea to have multiple copies of your data.
Which is exactly why I'm moving towards a NAS with 2 hot swap spares.

How annoying. I recently bought a 1.5TB Seagate after being WD exclusive for 8 years. I even have a production number that's supposed to be affected by that other firmware bug, but I haven't had a problem with it thus far. I've used around half of the space on the drive so far, and if it decides to take a dump now, I'm gonna be very angry! Oh well, back to WD exclusivity for me now. Better safe than sorry.
