I noticed that the card is actually MORE stable when overclocked compared to stock clocks. I'm currently running it at 1155 core/1365 mem and black screens are seen more rarely than with stock 1000/1200.

Hi Genesis, for me it's exactly the opposite and I'm suspecting that the card is "starving" for more voltage. When I tried to OC every time it crashed or produce some artifacts and after a while crash. Even ridiculously low OC of the GPU only from 1050 default to 1075 is not stable at all. But note that I don't use newer Sapphire bios and I'm using the default voltages. Also the card is very cold - ~50 degrees on default and never more than 60 overclocked (all those under more than 90% gpu load ofc.).

Also I want to report that my current setup is still solid. Yesterday I made another 5+ session in Borderlands 2 and everything was OK.

Well here is another flawless 5+ hours session in Borderlands 2.

the problem is getting better with every new driver release but is still completely random and unpredictable for me. i have been playing the new xcom, a very undemanding game, and for the first couple days i thought i finally found a new game that was immune but my optimism was repaid with disappointment again. just now i had it loaded for about 5 minutes before i got the crash when before i was able to leave it running for 15 hours strait with no trouble. every time it happens i become more and more convinced that this problem will NEVER be fully fixed. the best solution i can think of is to do an RMA and then sell whatever sapphire sends me back. i will still be out at least $100 since i payed $360 for the card about 4 months ago.

Hello everyone, i had this graphic card too and i have the same problem.

I have tried everything the people post here, but nothing worked.

But i only read how people just overclock the card to make it more stable. I did the opposite, i downclock the graphic card and now i can play more than 2 days without problems and continue more than 6 hours in diablo 3 and battlefield 3. I have the clock in 800/1000 and i think this is more stable for the card. If the problem is the voltage, maybe don't up the voltage, but down the clocks works fine.

I have this clocks now and i can play without a lot of problems with the black screen. I have 12.9beta drivers and i just touch the clock, nothing else. You can try it.

I think this is not a great card, is another card of AMD, but more expensive.

    Sorry for my english :p

Why isn't AMD fixing their drivers? This is bull****, so many months with this issue. In the future I'm only buying intel + nvidia that's for sure.

I am also having the same issue with my XFX R7870 Double D, specifically with sleeping dogs. Within an hour the the screen would freeze with a buzzing sound :(

I have tried drivers version 12.8 and 12.9, plus without OC and with OC all have the same issue.

Is there any solution to this problem yet! I don't want to go through the RMA process

UPDATE! It used to hang everytime in the same place next to the beach in Sleeping Dogs. Now I disabled Asus T.Probe from the BIOS settings, I have been playing for 2 hours straight without any issues. It seems that the T.Probe was changing something in the power of the PCI x16 slot... who knows?!:3eyes:

AMD driver team is clearly insufficiently funded. How do they plan not to lose current customers, not to mention draw another potential customers by this kind of crappy support and ongoing lack of hw/sw tuning? Even continuous price cutting won't persuade people demanding certain level of quality and reliability. Maybe they should ask engineers from Apple to help them. But avoid Apple's marketing department!

Doesn't matter what it costs, if you can't get the most basic things sorted out then it's simply not acceptable. When I buy a 300€ graphics card, I will most defintely expect it to work without crashing all the time 6 months after release.

Too bad AMD does not realize this so the only option for the customer is to change to nvidia.

Unfortunately monopoly (if AMD goes bankrupt which is quite possible under the circumstances) is never good news for the customer. I don't want to see the prices of new videocards then. Even now Nvidia's products seem overpriced to me.

I think maybe coordinated bombardment of AMD with e-mails demanding them to provide better drivers (give more money to hire better/more people to the driver team) or they'll definitely lose great amounts of customers could do us/them some good in terms of clearing the priorities.

But what if all the greats specialist in driver optimalization get overpaid by Nvidia...

Or turning bankrupt is a devious plan, because AMD was already secretly bought by Nvidia's puppetmasters..:)

    Solution for Sapphire HD 7870

    Dear friends ,

I am from India (Bangalore) a Software Engineer and MAD Gamer.

    Below are my PC Config.

    AMD Phenom X3 2.3Mhz.
    DDR2 800Mhz 4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    Sapphire HD 7870OC.
    CROSAIR TX750V2 Watts
    AOC 27" Monitor HDMI

I faced similar problem in this card :bang:, after a long research and experiment I found the solution as below:nerd:.

Step 1: Un-install old/other Display drivers (use driver sweeper to remove all old files)

Step 2: Download AMD Driver 12.6 (Very stable version and best currently)

    Step3: Install the Driver.

Step4: Open CCC (Catalyst Control Center) do as follow.
    1. Gaming => Tessellation => Set to "Application Settings".
    2. Gaming => Catalyst A.I => Uncheck 'Enable Surface Format Optimization"

Step5: Never touch AMD Overdirve in CCC its very dangreous.

    Step6: Install SapphireTRIXX

Step7: Overclock the Core Speed from 1050Hz to 1100Hz and
OverClock the RAM Speed from 1250Hz to 1300Hz.

Restart the Machine and see the difference. What I found is while overclocking the RAM 50% issues will resolve.

AND PLEASE FOR GOD SAKE USE PSU ABOVE 550W otherwise U WILL FACE GAME SLOW AND HANG

    Thanks
    Rajesh Kumar R

this process has definitely left me with more stability so far. i was crashing every couple of hours if not more before and now i have been running stable for about seven hours strait. i can't vouch for this method until i do much more testing but it has worked so far. thank you very much for your work on this:)

12.6 isn't any more stable than 12.8 when it comes to black screen sound loop. Might as well download the newest.

I'm having the same issue as well. I initially had an XFX 7870 DD and began experiencing the random crashes + sound loop (Windows Kernel error 41). I returned the 7870 and opted for a XFX 7950 Black Edition and it's the same story, same exact crashes. I think I'm about to jump ship to Nvidia and return this one as well.

And sorry for flood but did anyone tried 12.11 beta? It says "This driver introduces significant performance improvements for many games across ALL 28nm AMD Radeon™ HD 7000 Series products: HD 7700, HD7800 and HD7900 products."

Well, that sounds good. I hope Sapphire will publish a version for their own cards?!

Well I was happy too. But I wanted detailed info so I gave them a call. They said "it's standard procedure(the bios update). We tried all the benchmark tests we could and we didn't have a problem".

I'll go to my dormitory next week and try it and i'll keep you guys updated.
