Do you think we can expect some more decent NVMe SSDs to appear this year? The 960s are expensive as hell, and considering I'm looking into buying a 1TB drive, I am reluctant to go and buy one. I don't necessarily need that high speed, but I don't want something extremely slower (like most of the other NVMe ones are) either. Shall I wait and see?
Get a 1TB ssd if you think NVMe is too expensive. Most cheap NVMe don't hold a candle to the 960 series and have serious cost cuts, be it slow writes or w/e. The 960 evo 1tb is affordable.
Yes, but the question is: can we expect any new decent NVMe drives this year? There aren't very many of them in the market, and most are mediocre at best, according to reviews.
Not likely at the price point you want. There will be plenty of TLC drives but MLC will still be expensive especially due to the fact that NAND prices will be on the rise.
I didn't specify any price... Just not AS expensive as 960. I know they won't be cheap, but Samsung always comes with a huge premium.
Why do you say that? Maybe you are confusing samsung with intel. The good intel 750 NVMe 1.2tb is like $1300. 960 EVO is the best M.2 drive you can get for the money. The intel TLC 600P 1TB is $389(which is decent, but from what i take from your response it's not what you would call decent) EVO is $469~ but is significantly faster. There's also plextor MLC for about the same price as the EVO but again, much slower, it's still plenty fast though. You'll need to explain your definition of decent. My take is anything cheaper than the evo will be much slower, anything faster will cost a lot more too. There will not be anything cheaper + faster for a while due to nand shortages. So if you are going to wait, you can expect to wait a while.
