Many of us ask about the 5800x3d in comparison results as a guage of the performance boost with the newest generation. The 5800x3d was such a surprise and the only real comparison to a 5800x3d is another 3dx cpu.

Get well HH and thanks for the review.

Ah, gee! My best wishes for a speedy recovery, HH! God bless!

Supposedly, with the custom AMD Windows scheduler Microsoft is shipping in Windows you should not have to disable a CCD in the 7950X3d to run a game solely on the V-cache CCD as the scheduler is supposed to do that automatically. It works well from what I've been able to gather. The cores in the CCD that aren't being used are parked while the game is being played, which frees up power and reduces thermals on the entire CPU. The scheduler works transparently without user input, and when all 16 cores are needed to run asynchronously, they do, and without issue! Brilliant design for an architecture, imo.

Get well Hilbert. My brother also had a detached retina a few years ago. Took 2-3 weeks to heal and after a month said his vision was perfect.

Not necessarily - scheduler makes a big difference too. Even to this day, productivity workloads in Windows hardly benefit from the extra cache. In Linux, productivity workloads do get a sizable performance boost with the V-cache. The only significant difference I can come up with is that Linux has a drastically different scheduler.
Another good example where schedulers matter is the 3990WX, which was just a plain awful product in Windows but actually a bargain for Linux users. It's not just AMD's problem though - Intel struggles with this too because of the E-cores. Due to Intel's tight partnership with MS, they've managed to get this sorted a little faster, but it's still not perfect from what I can tell.

That's why I'm looking to upgrade to budget 8-core CPUs - pretty much the same performance in 4K but they use a lot less power.

Possibly but maybe not. The 7800X3D has lower boost clocks but it has higher base clocks. With fewer cores, it could potentially run cooler, thereby allowing it to boost higher for longer. When you factor in schedulers, you might have the "wrong" threads go to the non-V-cached CCX, which would make the 7950 even slower.

In my opinion, this testing tends to affirm my opinion that the design of the 7950X3D is flawed. What I would like to see is 3D cache on both CCXs. I really dislike non-homogeneous designs like this where one CCX has 3D cache and the other doesn't and Intel's latest processors with both "P" and "E" cores. No thanks. I would get a non-3D 7950X before a 3D one.

These tests strongly suggest the 7800X3D will be a great CPU for a lot of uses.

A dual 3d CCD would not help in gaming because games generally do not need more then 8 cores and the extra cache does not really help when rendering in windows, so a dual 3d will most likely be slower because the 3d CCD is clocked slower.
Maybe in the future games will use more cores and maybe there will be less cross CCD traffic latency and windows could get improved to better use the cache like some linux workloads, but when that happens 8000 or 9000 series could be out.

I think there are SOME games are benefits over 8 cores. RTRT game seems very CPU heavy due to RT graphics setup so threading that out would benefit more core CPUs.

Spiderman looks to benefit a lot from greater than 8 cores. The 13x00 kills the 8 core Ryzens. 3DVC helps compensate so imagine even 12 core with full 3DVC! I think that would be the gamer sweet spot.

Spiderman remastered scales very badly with core count.
5600, 5800, 5900 and 5950 have almost identical scores with 1080p high and RT on.
Same result with 7600,7700,7900 and 7950, identical scores.
The reason 13900k wins is because of the aggressive 1-4 core boost frequencies when most of the CPU is sleeping.

I did not mention rendering or gaming and I really don't care about them. I stated what I wanted because I use every core I can and I want them all to be the same.

The advise is still the same, If you are using every core you can get, your workload sounds very similar to CPU rendering and it has mostly no real benefit from the extra cache, the higher clock of the non 3d will give you more performance then the added cache.
Some Linux applications are able to get benefits from cache but it is still hit or miss.

Spiderman is all about DDR5 bandwidth :) More is better, like 8000mhz+ DDR5 in this game with RT=on

Everyone actual want monolithic die with MANY cores. Problem is that not many enough want to pay for it.

Not sure why we should care, it'll be sold out and scalped for another 6 months.

Oh wow I'm late with this but get well Hilbert. You had eye surgery and still managed to deliver top notch benchmarks and reviews! Much appreciated man. Rest up and take it easy big guy!

    Prayers up!
