Ryzen 7000 Series Processor Model Numbers Listed at AMD

Waiting for the 7xxx 3DVC!

 

Hmmm I beg to forgive my noobness, but what does the X behind the number stand for, and why do all of the four have one?

 

X is just a temporary replacement for a number so I do not need to type in:

7600
7700
7850
7950

etc... Wait... I see what you did there...Doh!

 

7800 or 7900 with 3d V-cache for me.

 

it's a model number, what does it matter? and why are you asking after 6 years?

 

You'll have to wait still as v-cache models wont be released this year.

 

Adding X to a model number makes the component go faster, much like adding flame decals and racing stripes to a car .

 

X from extreme?
The point is, they are the best model on that series. So you know the non "X" parts have slight lower clocks, performance and price.
I personally find the difference so small I prefer to save money and get the non "X" parts, invest in GPU for example.

 

Thanks for the feedback, I guess in times of lower and lower CPU dependance (meaning, higher resolution and more GPU bound scenarios), that's sensible.

 

With no 7800 listed assuming that's going be the 3D cache one.

 

Joking aside, many reviewers showed that buying the X version of the CPU is usually a waste of money, since you can get to the same level of performance with just some minor tweaks on the non-X version. To which AMD responded with later iterations of ZEN by only releasing the X versions at first and non-X versions much later in the lifecycle.

 

X versions have higher TDPs, and clock speeds are adjusted accordingly.
Of course, this only applies to stock configurations.

 

Because I haven't bought a CPU in about that many years? And no AMD CPU since Athlon times?

The lack of 7800X makes me think that name will be exclusive to the 3D cache, to avoid having 2 CPU with similar names and having the 7700x and 7800x with almost the same performance, like in the case of the 5700x and 5800x

 

Not many leaks about Zen 4, and it got me worried a bit...
Either AMD will surprise us all for the better, or Raptor Lake will win, at least until 3DV versions will come.

 

I see it more as them further trying to mirror Intel in their branding to help people identify which parts are "similar" in performance.

Intel usually has a x9xx x7xx x6xx as their top models so they likley want to mirror that to make it easier to compare.

 

Every gen I've made the correct prediction and bought the parts considered superior at each time I upgrade.


I'm planning to do the same later this year and have a good hunch it will be a Nvidia / Intel system once again (though I've owned amd parts recently too so please don't come at me with "fanboy".

It just so happens Intel had the best for the first half of the decade I've been building top end pc's and during the last half its gone back and forth but each time I needed an upgrade Intel was the one to get.

As far as gpu u haven't had a top tier radeon since the 7970 but that's because until just the gen they didn't even come close and even with current cards there's just too much Nvidia offers that radeon couldn't.

Being someone aiming for 4k/120hz gaming I got a feeling that won't change this time either.

 

The less leaks the better in my opinion.
