Well that goes exactly how he said it goes. 980 out performed Titan and 780 ti easy. 970 actually outperform those. Radeons did that earlier but then 3xx and the like were tad different. 280x out performed a 7970 which was the fastest (same card pretty much tho). It would mean that when AMD introduces 490 and maybe 490x those would outperform Fury and Fury X and possibly 1070 and 1080.

Then nvidia would release 1080ti and maybe a titan and then AMD would release something like Fury whatever it is going to be called I do not know.

The 980 wasn't that much faster than a 780ti was it? At launch? Then again maxwell and pascal are more similar than Kepler and maxwell

    980 was 7% faster at 1080p, 5% at QHD.

970 was about 5% slower at 1080p and 8% slower at QHD.

If it's hot+loud, that's horrible, as the card is small enough to go into prebuilts otherwise. If it's too hot though, prebuilts won't use it as they are usually really compact.

    But so what if it's ~5FPS off a 970? It's also ~$100 cheaper.

I think a lot will depends by the application used for benchmarks.. I would not be surprised if GCN Gen4 architecture revision will benefit more to low-level APIs (d3d12/vulkan) then older APIs (D3D11, OGL).

The 1060 is what will go up against it. What if that is much better than 970 but cost $250? Though I would expect it to be a little higher in price, but the added performance vs 480 may justify a little extra.

Can't go wrong for the money especially for new users.

As I said before though, there's nothing here for GTX970/390X users. A few weeks back I speculated this as a side-grade. Infact, it's not really. Benefits 390x users a little more, but, otherwise similar performance-wise.

Need to see DX12 and overclocked numbers for a more complete picture. As I said before though, you get what you pay for. This is a great 1080P card with a great price. If you're more forward looking, then, might be worth having another look at the last-gen AMD line-up or waiting for Vega (if you're not Nvidia inclined).

I think that's the best approach. Even for those of us planning to buy one.

considering the price of at 980gtx and what the price of that RX 480 is that is actually really nice price vs cost, its obviously not ment to complete with the 1080 or 1070

Supposition after supposition, and what ifs, enough of the what ifs and suppositions. The review is out tomorrow. Does anyone remember that these cards were only compared against the 950. AMD could have used a 960 or 970 but did not. All this 960/970 talk just proves that the cards turned out better than AMD expected, period. Have to keep in mind the target market they were intended for. That story has never changed.

It's funny you say that because from the beginning AMD were going for the big boys, the Pascal 1080. http://www.kitguru.net/components/g...x-two-amd-rx480s-beat-gtx-1080-in-ashes-test/

Showing slides of how 480 CFX can beat 1080. I said then "why do AMD feel the need to put the 480 in the same chart with the 1080?".

Then there was all the speculations that overclocked, this card can reach 1070 stock levels. Again, absurd, you'll need 2x 480 to reach that performance.

So contrary to what you say, I can't really remember anyone who said this should be mixing with the 950 or 960.

    AMD themselves.

The whole point of the CFX was to point out that with two of these cards you can end up close to 1080 performance and it would still be cheaper than purchasing a single 1080.

No. The whole point of that AMD slide was to point out that 2 of these cards can beat a 1080. Meaning a single card should perform around the 970/980 level.

Where did AMD say they are competing with the 960/950? Source?

If true I am a little upset as I was hoping to upgrade my GTX970 in my ITX rig with one of these.

However, there are rumors that they seriously underclocked these cards and that some people have gotten them to 1.6GHz with the stock reference cooler. So here's hoping!!

Come on Hilbert tease us with something at least.... :p

I can't wait for the reviews. Hopefully we'll hear something about the AIB cards soon, too.

Anyone know what time the review goes live on Guru and other major websites?

This is the only direct comparison ever done by AMD themselves before the CFX slide came about.

That video has nothing to do with performance. It's all about power efficiency. When they talked about performance, they went for the neck of the 1080, claiming (clumsily) that 480 crossfire beats it.
