    Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I was wondering if anyone else was running into some odd behavior with the MMO Rift. At the moment for me, and it seems other players, are having issues with the game hard booting the system. That is you'll be playing for about 10 minutes and the game will shut down the system. I haven't experienced this with any other game or application.

So, with that, any ideas what might be causing this or is anyone experiencing this too? I haven't ever had a machine just shut down on me without it being a short or the thermal sensor going crazy on the CPU.

    Thanks,

This used to happen on Heaven's Benchmark a lot even with 850W power, but the problem is the PSU still GPU shakes so fast the graphics that there's a minor
power lose and this will shut down the machine, if I am correct. It's not even that one would have an bad 'PSU' it's just full utilization by the code with no
restrictions or caps with out VSYNC, if you could apply VSYNC this would never happen I bet as was the case with 'Heaven's Benchmark' some time back.
This will most likely be patched out by RIFT developers/publishers by patches.

Of course I could be wrong here and there's many other things that might cause this, if someone knows better on Intel motherboard issues or such feel free to correct me.

    This may not be applicable:

I was having Rift issues, not reboots but GPU driver resets. This started happening out of the blue after I installed Windows 7 SP1.

I tried Microsoft's Hot Fix but it didn't solve the issue.

Uninstalling SP1 did solve it though.

This doesn't sound like same as OP message issue desc. More of an corrupted driver module or simply different version of data. Even game code corruption comes in mind.

Thanks TwL, good to hear from you again. I hope everything is going well. I believe this is an issue with their programming. It looks like it is driving temps well above what they should be (this is what the forms seem to indicate). It probably isn't on every configuration but it is an issue for some users.

I am staying away from RIFT until they patch it or I get a refund at this point.

This is a common problem with power in systems, its called fast switching

The problem could be coming from either your PSU or from your wall socket being unable to adjust to quick dynamic power loads and you get whats known as a "Brown out" and the PC reboots either because of power loss or to protect itself from the brown out

A failing PSU can also cause this problem simply because it can't provide clean and stable power

Anyways, try hooking your computer up to a power bar or UPS that has power filtering and see if that fixes the problem

EDIT: That's not to say bad programming can't cause this, which it can, a crash that happens in the hardware layer which is above the kernal will crash the computer and cause a reboot without a BSoD since the crash occurred above the kernal

Minecraft for example since the Oct update will cause me to do a instant reboot of my system, a system that is 10+ hours Linx stable

A crash that occurs in the hardware layer is just really ****ty programming, there is nothing you can do about it other then wait for them to fix the code which is causing the hardware access error

    Thanks for the reply.

It turns out that I had the "driver not responding and has recovered" error again today, the first since uninstalling SP1.

For troubleshooting purposes I have uninstalled Catalyst AI and all associated software. Windows Update gave me an ATI Update, so that's what I am using at the moment, I am going to see where I am at with running Rift.

Additionally, I reversed a CPU overclock I had as well, but the problems had been occurring with default clocks (I always suspect OC's so go default mode).

    Same here

I have two machines that I run Rift from. My home machine a Sager laptop has no issues other than not being able to run the game beyond low settings... thats due to hardware not being all that great.

My work machine, a thinkpad T410 also runs the game at low settings, but gets the power down issue. It happens randomly only when running rift. Sometimes I can make it 5 minutes, sometimes a half an hour but inevitably it'll just power down completely.

I saw something up top in this thread about Heaven and VSYNC. I'm going to give the vsync a try and see if that helps.

Well, VSYNC should in a sense disable the effect @Valagard there explains same issue I was trying to explain, if it can be forced over everything like CCC 'Always ON' would
probably do pretty good job. However, to do it properly the VSYNC should be on by the application and I don't know if RIFT would have this option available.

However, this would lock the high jump on FPS or stress to hardware to monitor refresh.

There is an option in the application to enable vsync. I've been running for about an hour now without a crash so far.... lets see how it goes.

The issues described definitely sounds like a power issue to me, as mentioned by others. If setting vsync to cap the FPS at 60 helps, but not enough to prevent the system from restarting, try setting the FPS cap to 30. Alternatively, you can establish if it's a driver issue by running FurMark for 30 mins to an hour and see if the system restarts.

I also wanted to touch up on johnathonm's statement about the game causing the card to get hot. Generally speaking, it's not possible for a game to cause the video card to overheat. Normally the games that are blamed for causing video cards to overheat are usually games that cause the card to run at full load, which simply exposes a problem with the cooler or the card's safety threshold.

I have the same problem in (and not only) Resident Evil 5 benchmark my PC shutdown without any message... On my GTX460 1GB OC it never happens... For my it looks like problem with bad switching from 2D clocks to 3D clocks on my HD6950 2GB and (bad?) PowerTune settings. Also sometimes this problem happens when i watch movies and switching it ''fastly''. We need tell AMD about this problems..

I am having the same problem. Nothing is overheating, the power supply is an 850w Corsair. I did testing with FUrmark and something to stress the processor etc. and the system was fine.

THis ONLY happens when playing RIFT and as you said, it is random. The Devs haven't responded in the RIFT forums at all about the issue.

    Radeon 5870 here.

VSync did not work. Windowed or Full Screen does not matter.

Interesting. What catalyst version are you on? I'm using a 5850 with an i7 930 on a weaker 700W PSU with absolutely no issues so far. Edit: Using 11.2 catalyst.

I am using 11.2 as well. The client conflicts with something....don't know what it is.

BUt it is something that no other game conflicts with! :-\

Well on a positive note, after about 30 minutes on hold listening to bad classical, Trion refunded my money.

I expected it to be more of a battle, but was fortunately wrong. I'd advise anyone who is having the power issue to consider calling them and asking them for a refund. The game may be worth exploring down the road, but is not currently with the potential cost of killing equipment. No game is worth that much.

Odd thing is, even Crysis, on supermax everything in the benchmark mode doesn't have issues. At this point maybe we should be asking ourselves "But can it run Rift?".

Just for your information for those that believe this could be a heat issue, here are the last few minutes of my gametime just before a crash. Check the heat, and GPU load in particular

    Code:
Date , GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Temperature [°C] , Fan Speed [%] , GPU Load [%] , Fan Speed [RPM] ,
