This new 4090 is amazing in the same way a Lamborghini Aventador or a Porsche 911 GT3 is... outstanding examples in their field... but not anything I could ever justify spending that much of my tiny amount of savings on!

YES. Ultra-high resolution VR headsets running simulation software (driving/flying/adult).... eg Flight Simulator reviewed here. Why do people keep asking this question??

Fairness? Apples to apples comparison... since 30x0 series were also tested with exact same hardware configuration?

Impressive performance but pricing is insane. The whole 40 series right now look like its made for people who want the best and for the rest tough luck.

Ultra high VR, seems a reasonable use case, M$ flight sim, not really its fine on anything over 30FPS due to its nature.

Why do people suggest 2 use cases and it covers every game warranting such performance?

that's not the point, the point is I want to see what the 4090 is truly capable of with the fastest CPU available. The 5950x at 1080p/1440p is weak when compared to 7950x and 12900ks. It even bottlenecks the 3080ti/3090/3090ti at those resolutions. I think Raptor Lake will be capable to push the 4090 additional 30-40% at 1080p/1440p when compared to 5950x.

To be fair, I can't think of any regulars here who thought that was a good idea. Which was a refreshing breath of sanity, considering some of the recommendations I've read over the years.

I can afford one but can i afford a AIB 4090 @ 500W while gaming.

Factory OC cards will AVG around 500W and that's not some harsh GPUs benching software that's while gaming.

That's too much, ok i know it will heat your room on it's own but overall the PC will be using 750-850w.

    Great review btw HH.

That's not the point of this review at all. It's supposed to show how much better this GPU is with the same hardware than previous GPUs. If you go changing other hardware, that is cheating... you are now combining the hardware improvements from the GPU + the new CPU which is not a fair or valid comparison so you cannot use all the results of the previous GPUs in a graph. How is he supposed to graph all the old GPUs with the 7950x and 12900ks?

Seeing how fast can this go with everything maxed out hardware wise is a different review altogether.

Imagine buying a 4090 and you actually care about 1080/1440p results. :D

Raptor Lake's huge 36mb of L2 cache fused with 4090's 96mb of L2 cache will result in massive uplift in performance than what you see in this benchmark with old Zen 3 processor. You folks havent seen anything yet what 4090 has to offer.

    in comparison:

    alder lake = 14mb of L2 cache
    rtx 3090ti = 4mb of L2 cache

[sarcasm] Well the easy obvious answer to that would be Hilbert benchmarking on a 7950x or 12900ks every single gpu released in the past 6 years so he can satisfy Jason's curiosity. (40 something gpus x 3 resolutions x how many games = lolz) [/sarcasm]

There will be for sure someone that will buy this baby for an old 1080p monitor, with the fps capped to 75Hz.

I love ultra settings, high refresh rate and high fps, but hey, enjoy your 60hz 4k monitor with a 4090.

he can do stand alone benchmark with zen 4 or 12900ks and then compare it with these, its not that hard, very simple and short.

damage control at its finest, no need to spew stupidity when in fact everyone should know the true performance of the 4090 with the fastest available CPU on the market.

I´m having mixed feelings about this one.

On one hand, it offers great performance, although i was expecting even more, and manages to use less power than the previous generation.

But on the other hand, the cards still uses huge amounts of energy and it`s expensive as hell.

And i can`t get over the physical footprint of the card, the card is so big and so heavy.

In the end, i feel that Nvidia pushed performance at the expense of almost everything else and i`m not a big fan of this type of philosophy.

A special mention about DLSS3, that seems to have the potential to be a future game changer, for better or worse.

    Great review Hilbert!

By the way, what`s going to happen to all the 3090s that are being sold at almost the same price as this 4090?...

I had a quick look at our local auctions, new 3090Tis are down to €1200, saw a couple of used ones for €1100 . I expect them to fall to below €1000 when 4080 goes live. They will still sell.

Agreed on 1080p, but I wouldn't mind that performance on 1440p as a 144Hz user. I actually think it'd be just great. Not for that price though, f that.

Besides, what's overkill today is future proof tomorrow. 6 years ago some people questioned my 1080 Ti purchase for 1080p 144Hz yet merely 2 years down the line it started struggling to meet that FPS target in cutting edge games close to maxed out. Once I upgraded to 1440p the impact was massive. Would've probably kept it for one more generation if I hadn't upgraded.

So all that extra performance isn't for nothing, even if it's not that useful today. But again, hard to recommend it with this price. As far as we know once Nvidia clears their 3000 series stock they might slash the prices on the 4000 series, especially if AMD starts being aggressive on prices.
