Oh didn't know it was a new microarchitecture - thought it was just a die shrink. Anyway it appears it doesn't beat the 5820K in the newer benchmarks like Vantage so maybe the 06 benchmark is just simplistic or something.
Yeah it's about time I got rid of my 920 too - even though logically it makes no sense for gaming because it never hits anywhere near 100% for gaming - but for productivity like Adobe Premiere Pro editing 4K footage I think the best platform right now for me is X99 with Haswell-E 5820K (don't think the extra £155 for 5930K is worth it over 5820K).
378 euro for the 6700K here, 422 or something for the 5820K (has gone up today!). No point in upgrading for me: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review-6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/22
It doesn't, besides the charts are for default clocks. So of course if you measure performance per clock from a slightly older 3.3-3.6 six core to a newer 4.0-4.2 quad core, the later will win. Sure the 6700K will overclock better than the 5820k (not by THAT much, considering the voltage Hilbert needed for 4.8), but still, if I had to make the choice I would still go for a 5820K X99 combo over Skylake, simply because it's roughly the same price and you do get 6 cores. If AMD would step up their game again, we wouldn't be here, but as it is, Intel is simply maximizing profits, so no wonder we get these prices and questionable upgrade reasons.
Like H pointed out in his review. It's not really about performance upgrades anymore. It's more about the package as a whole. With USB 3.1, DDR4 and all the other things too. If for example you like to transfer large amounts of data to USB sticks, then this is the system for you.
I was all in with this Skylake, but reading all the reviews now... all I can say is 'lol' yea I'll gladly wait.. not like my 3770k is holding me back. And Win10? hah.. **** Win10.. perfectly fine on Win8.1
4.8ghz with 1.45v ?!?! My 4790k is right now at 4.8ghz with 1.368v 24/7 stable. Really disappointing . Problem is the lack of competitiveness...
USB 3.0 can manage 100MBps writes easily. That should be enough for most people. DDR4 is debatable for gaming anyway. AMD need to do something
Yep, Im definately gonna be staying on my X79 for a while and just get a 4930k eventually. I already hated going from a 6 core Xeon @ 4.5ghz to a quadcore i7 @ 4.5ghz but X58 was just too outdated motherboard wise for what I needed anymore. Im pretty damn proud of what my quad channel DDR3 1866 @ 1960mhz is pulling vs DDR4 speeds @ 3200mhz. Still impressive that its only dual channel DDR4 pulling that kind of bandwth. What really sucks is that my cpu will actually do 5ghz stable but this motherboard wont even boot with the 1.25 bootstrap set that I need. Worked perfectly at the shop with a ASUS X79, but that was over $100 more. Id love to get it @ 4.75ghz just to beat the speed of my previous Xeon setup.
Nope not really. Even the 2500k does very good in BF4 when its over 4ghz. My 3820 is just a 2600k pretty much with a better motherboard/chipset setup. My buddy has a 2500k @ 4.6 with 670 2gb sli, and it handles BF4 or any game like a champ still.
Sure it is, DX12 will reduce CPU dependency, right? Regardless, 5820K is 425 € here. But i don't upgrade immediately, i will wait month or two to see if there is no problems with CPU or chipset, like i waited with purchase of 920/X58.
Thanks for the review, going 6700k over 5820k! Was a tough choice, but think skylake will be more fun. EDIT: somehow though, despite the in depth review, going from 3930k to 6700k feels like a step back...
Yeah it appears to trade blows with the 5820k somewhat. Decent performance increase but not exactly groundbreaking. I hate lack of competition.
Yeah next year we should (hopefully) be seeing some good CPUs and maybe even GPUs being released again. But if AMD cant deliver again I am gonna have to jump ship back to intel. Guess I will start saving for the new mobo+cpu+ram setup Ill be doing next year.
Yep. After this review I'm strongly thinking about a 5820K. Mainly because some parts in my PC are really starting to age :nerd:
Very nice review Hilbert! Liking Skylake and the platform, my only gripe is the price of the chip itself. Think it could be a little cheaper, £319.99 here in the UK, felt £299.99 for retail would have been better and £279.99 for OEM.
