Review: AMD Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT

You must have not read the review. The 2070 Super is substantially ahead in almost every game except Metro, Tomb Raider, and Battlefield V, and in the GPU shootout the 2070 Super is a clear 15% ahead of the 5700XT which is at the same score as the 2060 Super.

 

There are more games where 5700xt is faster that HH didnt test.

Indeed, also look at the added power when OCed- this shows it got more potential.

Shootout is not some aggregate score, it is just one benchmark in which Radeon VII, 5700XT, RTX 2070 sit in same space. It does not provide ranking that could be use as indication of general gaming performance, nor average gaming performance.
It is set of 2 tests that have certain workload distribution across different parts of GPU. And one that is closest to this ratio will get best score. But each game is different and therefore ranking is different.
(That's why 3DMark has so many tests over the years as they become obsolete for measuring average modern gaming workload soonish.)

 

Interesting times. Surely best gpus before 2080, 2080s and 2080ti. Price doesn't matter as they are another tier.

New arch and new features. 2070s and below are not an option and average real life gamer won't care about RTX.

 

Both products seem very good and absolutely win their price/performance battle against their NV counterparts, but I would go for the XT version this time, which is rare for an AMD product (I usually choose the cheaper versions, f.e. Vega 56, RX 570).

 

Is it my idea or those came out better than what we expected?

 

They did. Amd really suprised us.

 

Well the graphs showed this at the AMD event. It's nice to see that their efficiency is in the butt of the NV counterparts and the RX5700 has even better performance/Watt ratio than the RTX2060. I know AMD has smaller die size, but hey, nobody (or at least I hope) buys GPU because it is made with smaller die size.

BTW, HILBERT: Wouldn't it be possible to make an "average" chart at the end of GPU and CPU reviews? It would be so awesome. Thanks for your hard weekend work on the AMD products.

Great midrange cards, excellent vega64 tier performance with good pricing. Nvidia did shake up the release of these cards a bit, but clearly they had to scramble to adjust their own product range rather significantly to accommodate for these new cards on the market, and shows that competition finally is back in the market place in a real way.

Aftermarket cards may well transform these into exceptional beasts, and looking at this I am interested to see both the higher tier navi as well as AMD's own RT implementation, though more for curiosity than any actual purchasing preference. I simply wonder if there is a simpler and cheaper to the end user way of delivering a comparable experience for a fraction of the price, reminiscent of the gsync/freesync situation.

And I agree, AMD is back on form. The future looks good for us consumers!

 

Just read the review and those are some very nice cards and for me they are a better choice than the ones from Nvidia because of the lower although all of them are a little overpriced...
Now he need to see how they behave with proper coolers because the stock ones are crap.

Yeah will be fun to read if the architectural changes and what the clock speeds will be (Less?) can make a bigger difference still compared to the 5700's here, naming also means a possible 5800 or 5900 or even both if Navi20 doesn't turn into some 6000 series lineup next year which could also happen, depends I guess if Navi20 is mid or late 2020 and if AMD might get a 5800 revision in or if the 5700's will be it for Navi10 here but I guess we'll know soon enough once they have something to announce plus I am expecting mobile versions of the GPU as well if the 7nm process is good enough and a eventual replacement for Vega, if the drivers and hardware can be improved further then there's not much place for Vega now after all if the 5700's can overtake it definitively while also costing less although it could see a price drop as retailers drop their stocks of existing cards but that's just speculation.

VII's a curious one too also being matched a bit in some reviews, leading in others and being surpassed in others (Old review scores? Eh could be a number of different causes.) but then that's also mostly surpassed unless you need the additional memory capacity and HBM advantages for compute tasks or software work since it's not going to be worth the price/performance ratio against the Navi cards or NVIDIA's GPU's for gaming as I'm seeing it at least.
(It's not bad but it's like 800 US Dollars or more and then what the Euro pricing will be from country to country against this at around half that price for the 5700 and a bit more for the 5700XT but the difference between the XT and non-XT is fairly small so far.)


EDIT: Well not too good at descriptions and all that as usual but price and performance wise the 5700 and 5700 XT if the price holds is positioned pretty aggressively especially after AMD reduced it further just before launch and the improvements are already showing promise against earlier GPU's so it competes really well as-is even with early drivers, stock coolers and as seen from the one water block test so far it can scale up even with the driver problems though not everyone will be overclocking it like that either heh.

Going to be really fun to see what the third party AIB models will be capable of once the blower fan goes off and what's going to be on offer for both air and water cooling and possible driver improvements for the next few months and clock speeds for the non-reference models if it's possible to squeeze some performance out without going into the 2 Ghz reach and setting voltage to max with fans at hella loud level.
(Water can make a difference here if that's going to be a thing though so that will also be a fun little read I'm thinking.)

 

Yes Sir, as a midrange buyer/gamer the "non xt" 5700 looks damn great....

I wonder where on Earth you live with the place apparently being even more expensive than Finland, at least with hardware. That's something of a sad achievement, for sure. I can see Sapphire 5700 for 389€ and 5700 XT for 449€. Not that these would personally interest me as I don't care for reference models, at least with the blower cooler. It would have been nicer if custom models had started from that 389€, but I reckon they will automatically be over 400€ with the reference being that much.

 

I think most reviewers had the same thoughts as HH regarding price. Most were expecting a disruptive price with regard to Navi (similar to Ryzen), which we did not get. From the Digital Foundry conclusion:

I really want to buy a 50th Anniversary 5700XT--but can't find one @ Amazon US; or Newegg! Bought the 3600X & the Aorus Master from Newegg yesterday--couldn't find but a few low-end x570 mboards on Amazon US, and that was after a diligent search. Well, I'll tell you, I am absolutely unimpressed with nVidia's "refined 16nm process" *cough* that puts out huge, hugely expensive discrete 3d cards costing up to $1300....! Excuse me, I'll pass. nVidia has a rough road ahead bringing those giant chips down to 7nm and below. I could care less who the frame-rate king of the hill is, because I play games--not benchmarks. If the gameply is fluid and stutter-free, I'm happier than a pig in mud. Especially when I can save several hundred dollars. People have such faith in heavily optimized-for benchmarks the entire time they are being manipulated by them, imo. But to each his own.

Edit: Found the 5700 in stock on Amazon--listing for the 5700XT says it "usually ships in 3-4 weeks"...lol.... May wind up waiting on an AIB partner board in August.

Edit2: OK, this morning Newegg does have the 5700XT reference cards in stock.

One other thing I wanted to add on the bang-for-buck scale after actually looking at the G3d review on these cards is that it is interesting to note (at least for me) that although the ~$1300 RTX-2080ti is never even 2x as fast as the 5700's (both of them)--sometimes not even close to 2x as fast, depending on the benchmark or game--the 2080ti is always ~3.2x the price of the 5700XT, and always ~3.7X the price of the 5700. Plus these AMD cards support PCIex4--whatever that will mean, if anything (apparently HH tested them @ Intel's best atm, PCIe3.x), and probably they both support Crossfire & D3d12 multi-GPU, which the 2060 Super does not (No SLI for you, bub.). I thought ti was nice to see nVidia bringing the 2060 Super up to Rx-480/580/590 standards with a 256-bit bus and 8GBs of vram--but nVidia screwed the pooch again on the SLI for this card. I'd say the odds are pretty much 100% that this was deliberate on the part of nVidia...

Edit #4: OK--my driver dilemma with the 19.7.1's has resolved itself with a happy ending because none other than Lisa Su parachuted into my front yard this afternoon, and told me, while neatly stowing away her 'chute, "I saw your post on G3d--so I'm here!" It turns out that all I needed to do was clean install--which I should have done as this is a fundamentally new driver with a greater size and feature support than the earlier Adrenalins. She chatted with the wife for about ten minutes and enjoyed some hot tea and crumpets, then she bade me farewell, said she had a few more houses to visit in the area. I watched with my mouth wide open I know as she threw some kind of device into the air which began unreeling cable at a fantastic rate and shooting straight up--when a low-flying plane with a V catch plate in the front swept in low, and Lisa was ripped from the ground and on her way! Even though she was "in a hurry" *cough* she still waved farewell as she rapidly retreated away into the distance, and I really did think that was a nice touch... All's well that ends well, eh?

Wanted to chime in and say that as alluded to above I fixed my driver problem--instead of trying to install the 19.7.1's on top of the 19.6.3's as I did--I should have just done a clean install, as with baited breath, I watched the clean install complete yesterday! Even down to the funky colors on the desktop before rebooting--all fixed now and running fine.

I really, really want to see a review on the 50th Anniversary edition--if positive, probably will buy one this week!
