The Windows' one takes forever. Any recommended disk defragmenter, preferably a free version?

Diskeeper 2010. Not free, but it prevents fragmentation before it happens.

MyDefrag is nice and quick when it comes to defragmenting. The optimization routines are terribly slow though, so I forgo even the "Optimize Daily" option in favor of just running "Optimize Monthly" every so often , plus a regular defrag after each minor installation / uninstallation.

O&O 11 is still free if i remember correctly, that's what I'm using. Otherwise My Defrag is pretty good.

O&O is great, but I've been using Defraggler. Same people who make the equally amazing and free CCleaner and Recuva

FREE: "Auslogics Disk Defragmenter" - the fastest and the most thorough, excellent interface that looks fantastic, it does not install ANY additional service (which could hog memory), only the program and it works 100% in X64.

you can also defrag single files or a bunch of selected files which is really useful.

it has an option to skip files of certain size, you can schedule defrags and even optimize your boot files to be put at the beginning of the drive for faster boot. it's great.

NOT FREE: "Perfect Disk" - the best defragmenter in the world.

    http://www.perfectdisk.com/

i've tried every defragmenter under the sun, including "Defraggler", the one made by the same people behind CCLEANER.. it was the slowest free program and it wasn't very thorough.

Mydefrag (free) - is popular but it's no good, left too many fragments on my drives even after a complete defrag, other programs including PerfectDisk and Auslogics found the missed fragments and defragged them perfectly, program can be unstable and crash, the interface looks like crap (image below).

only good thing is that it's portable, bottom line: avoid.

    huh?

QuickSys Defrag (free) - is decent but the interface is not intuitive.

O&O defrag (not free), that's my 2nd choice if you're willing to pay.

Diskeeper (not free)...only reason this program sells is because of its name, too many options and it doesn't get half of the basics right.

Windows Defrag (free, built-in windows) - slow as hell (just like defraggler), not thorough, skips far too many files.

go for Auslogics Defrag, you won't regret it.

    lol sticky? :D

    +1 for Diskeeper 2010 Pro.
Automatic fragmentation prevention FTW! Also, very fast and thorough defrags in automatic defrag mode.

Been Diskeeper for a couple of years now. Believe me, it's worth every penny.

I've had great results with Defraggler on a number of machines. The problem with many defragmenting programs even the Windows Defragmenter is they DO defrag the volume but they fail to place the data in the most optimum location on your hard drive: the front!

Yeah, Defraggler is a little slow in comparison to some others, but theres a reason why its slower. It essentially defragments and resorts your entire hard drive so that ALL of your data is placed at the very beginning of the drive where your drive performs best.

What ? it doesnt have that many options in its main program at all
and trust me it gets plenty of "basics" correct

when ive tried perfect disk (the one that defrags disks that are in use btw) or O&O after uninstalling diskeeper they have always stated the drive health is perfect

so i guess diskeeper must be doing its job
