    My 17 inch CRT monitor is about to die so I want to buy a new LCD one. I have no clue what to look for, though I've heard Samsung are good.

    I only want 17 inch (though I heard CRTs and LCDs are different sizes), low response time. I like my desktop at 1024x768, my games at 1280x1024. Don't want widescreen. Not sure about Contrast Ratio.

    I have max AU$500 (US$400) to spend. And the monitor has to be available in Western Australia.

    @milamber,

    If Dell ships to Western Australia without absolutely killing you on shipping charges:

    23 inch Samsung widescreen
    (click the 'On Sale Now' to see the sale price, it is $179.99 here in the States)

    What's are good Contrast Ratio, Brightness and Viewing Angle?

    Also, if the native resolution is 1280x1024, will the desktop look any good at 1024x768?

    And what about DVI?

    No it will look blurry. You must try to keep it at native res, bad thing about LCDs.

    ST19AG_WGreymon, a 17inch LCD is bigger than a 17inch CRT right? Because 1280x1024 is too small on my CRT except in games.

    I think the screen size should be about the same.

    Correct, usually. A 17" CRT generally has a 16" viewable area. A 17" LCD means the full 17" is viewable. Usually. YMMV. :)

    Ended up buying a 19" Samsung 943B. Very nice, though I can't get the contrast/brightness right in GTA 4 now.
