so after all these years i found out WHY i could never get DD or DTS out of the optical out on the realtek on board.

Apparnt the offical drivers have the DD/DTS functions LOCKED

    http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...olby-digital-live-and-dts-interactive.193148/

after read this thread and get the correct unlocked drivers for 2.79 i using low and behold OPTICAL OUT on the realtek now does DD/DTS and the blue light on revicer lights up....

which lead me to next question why does realtek say they support but LOCK it behind there offical drivers?

This info is for those that have the same issue of Optical only doing 2 channels

Today I tried modding or unlocking my motherboard realtek drivers following that techpowerup thread. Was a little confusing trying to figure out the relationship between 2.7X driver vs the full driver release version 6.01.XXXX. So I followed the directions and replaced the realtek dll in my windows system32 folder but had limited luck. Got Dolby Live to appear in the selection menu but it was stuck at two channels. Couldn't get 5.1 to work. So I went back to the default. Maybe play around with it some more later but as far as why they lock the feature probably has to do with licensing from the mainboard and what they were willing to pay or shell out to realtek to keep their costs down. As my board was an Asus I didn't want to mess around with Asus features by installing the generic driver package even though it was newer. Sucks Asus doesn't update their audio driver package more frequently though. Still I feel the sound quality on motherboard audio has gotten so much better I don't miss the added features anyhow.
