As you guys have learned from our Kaveri review, gaming is a pretty decent experience with that APU. Clear is that the GPU inside the APU is rather dependant on the system memory, as such faster memor...

Aren't most memory sticks dual sided nowadays, anyway? (If I understand correctly, "dual-ranked" means "double sided.")

I can get 2 x 4 GB sticks rated at 2400 MHz for EUR 80, while the same amount of memory at 1866 MHz costs EUR 74. So, at least for me, the added cost is worth it if the performance difference is big enough — which I think it is.

EDIT: Scratch that, "dual-ranked" and "double sided" don't mean the same thing.

I think it would be interesting if us gurus would share whether or not our memory is dual-ranked. Mine is, by the way.

    EDIT 02: Currency missing

I have great difficulty understanding what you mean by Dual-Ranked.
afaik its not a computing term.

Dual-Channel memory (two sticks of RAM, one memory controller each).
Double-Sided Memory ( Where there are chips on both sides of the DIMMs).

Double-sided memory used to be slower than their single sided brethren, and were preferred (SDR/DDR days).

Could you do a clear definition of what you mean by Dual-Ranked ? :)

Edit : I think this paragraph from TechPowerUp explains it best :)
Edit2 : Someone also kindly put up a link to the wikipedia page :

lucky you, coz the cost for decent 2400 MHz DIMMs in my country are not worth getting at compare to the 1600 for the fps gain
And also I wonder if those APUs can produce minimal variance in frame latency, as I read from some site, the frame latencies are all over the place and that translates to a not smooth gaming experience.

  7. You know... some el cheapo Hynix and Samsung RAM modules clock like crazy too...

I wonder how would DDR4 perform if it were supported. It's not surprising to see substantial gains from DDR3 because the operating frequency is still much lower compared to GDDR5 in discrete cards.

Yeah... If a given piece of hardware can push 50+ FPS, but the experience feels stuttery, it won't be worth it. Well, some Kaveri reviews are going to delve into frame latencies.

is dual ranked supposed to mean ram on both sides of the cpu like the 2011 socket?

According to HWiNFO64, My DDR3 2400 Kingston HyperX predator are dual rank.

Pretty happy about that since I'm planning on building a Kaveri system soon and I only paid £36 for them due to a terrible add on ebay by somebody who bought them by mistake.

Module Part Number is KHX2400C11D3/4GX in case anybody is interested or fancies making a list of dual ranked ram. :)

Like most said, any newer high density ram is dual ranked - has ram chips on both ends.

lol I got curious and my Crucial balisitx Elite is 2 ranks/8bank per 4gb stick.

Mine is Rank 2 as well. Kind of wondering now how you can buy a 4GB module that isn't dual rank.
