We grab eight different processors from AMD and Intel and have a peek if modern age processor make a performance difference with the Radeon HD 7970. Will a 1000 USD processor offer much more performance... ?

Been waiting for this. Results as expected I suppose, nice to see AMD on a pretty level playing field at high resolutions.

I'm glad my old AthlonII X4 CPU was included in this test. Underrated $99 CPU for gaming. Makes me want to build another cheapo AMD rig.

Does anyone still play Starcraft 2? Was thinking there could be a benchmark for that by simply filling up the screen with 200 units on the same map and checking the FPS. Or maybe that's too tedious to build all those units every time? You could just go to challenge mode since all the units are there already.

Well i think ill still buy 2 for some crossfire goodness or maybe 3. Hopefully they are $450-$500AUD then again probably more like $600 anyhow guess ill find out when pccasegear stocks them.

Yes, in many games its not dramatic, but in others it certainly can be:

The differences of course would be far more pronounced in multi-gpu setups and/or heavy multi-player games.

Also, if you are a serious gamer, and have a mediocre CPU (but high perf GPU), a nice alternative hardware upgrade would be... get a 2560x1600 monitor.

Yup, it also depends where you do the benchmarking. Some maps in certain games are more CPU dependent then others.

I would like to see this done for Skyrim in a town. ;)

Excellent overview, I am satisfied with the CPU scaling ^_^ (woo hoo).

    ---

[Note: This is a very long shot comment, please ignore if its a bit harsh.

I think a Multi GPU with CPU scaling at maximum Vram saturation point without overloading the GPU performance at Eyefinity would really stand apart for the actual utilization for the enthusiastic users of the later (CPU). <- but I personally feel its takes up extraordinary resources to tabulate the observation....]

Yea....I've been preaching this for some time now - that a Phenom II is more than enough to run any single graphics card without bottlenecking..... Mostly falls on deaf ears though. :p

Good to see it in print, thanks for review Hilbert..

    Yes Please!

Interesting how X58 is still holding it's own even against the newer uber intel platforms (a testament to it still being used as the Guru3D GPU test rig). I like my current setup enough atm to only upgrade the GPU(s) in the near future to probably 2 of these assuming the price is right. Having had issues with R5XXX Eyefinity in the past I'm sure version 2.0 will make life much easier.

    Thanks Hilbert!

Nice review, but I would of really liked to see a 1090/1100T being used also since most of us owners with those cpu's wont waste the money on the 8150.

    Nice review Hilbert

I've always believed CPU didn't matter so much in Modern titles at high res, its all mostly GPU. Though a crossfire version of this review (in the future) would also be awesome, see how the older CPUs feed two of those monsters.

I was seriously thinking about going IB in March/April when it drops, but now im not so sure i really need too or even if i want to now tbh! I becoming more interested in completing this build and just using it until i struggle to run modern games then upgrade.

What I'm really wanting to do now is get into Overclocking and Benching on the Bot and score points for Guru3D with a dedicated benching rig :)

    CPUs @ Stock
    Athlon II X4 645 - 3.1GHz - Quad Core - AM3
    Phenom II X4 970 - 3.5GHz - Quad Core - AM3
    AMD FX-8150 - 3.6GHz - Eight Core - AM3+

    Core i5 661 - 3.33GHz - Dual Core - LGA1156
    Core i7 870 - 2.93GHz - Quad Core - LGA1156
    Core i7 965X - 3.20GHz - Quad Core - LGA1366
    Core i7 2600K - 3.40GHz - Quad Core - LGA1155
    Core i7 3960X - 3.30GHz - Six Core - LGA2011

I would say the 1090/1100T would have similar performance to the Phenom II X4 970 and should have little better performance over the FX-8150 unless the game/app uses multicore in which the X6 will gain advantage over the 970.

Ya, thats for the most part my same thought, but just still would like to see the bench of them for the heck of it.
