    Hey guys.

I just noticed my 2nd gtx 980 is at x8 mode. first card is at 16x mode.
Why is that? shouldn't it both of them be at x16?
in the bios, they are both on GEN 3.

    I have a 950pro 500Gb M.2 SSD and a Sound blaster Zr

The Zr is in the PCIE_X8_2 which is the 2nd red slot on the board.

I know the M.2 would use some lanes. The bottom most red pcie slot is disabled because of the m.2. technically shouldnt i have enough lanes to run the 2 gpus at x16?

    thanks.

Unfortunately you are limited by the R5E... by using the Soundblaster (I think it's not the M2), you are limited in PCIe lanes because of the board's internal routing.

Check the manual, page '1-19' there's a table for 40 lane CPUs (and 28 lanes like the 5820K), which states that as soon as you use x16_1, x16_2, and the x8_2, it's down to 16/8/8.

If you check page '1-20' I think you could avoid it by switching the soundblaster to x1_1, which does not share the path with the x16/x8 slots.

It should be running 16/16 for both cards. Its a 40 lanes CPU.

Although take a look : [IMG]

No it shouldn't, because he is using the x8_2 also. See page 1-19 (the table above what Undying posted) and the next page 1-20 and you'll see.

Here's the link for the manual here:
    page 1-19 https://manualscollection.com/?fid=9cd1774693cad334a09c6f44ca86051e&read=online&page=37
    page 1-20 https://manualscollection.com/?fid=9cd1774693cad334a09c6f44ca86051e&read=online&page=38

So the best thing you can try is to run the Soundblaster in x1_1 and see if the cards still run in 16/8/8, but I'm not sure.

i looked.... but i cant put the soundcard in the x1 slot. see for urself since we pretty much have the same system and watercooled 980's. since the 980's are dual slot, its blocking the x1 slot. damn shame.

EDIT: i turned off pcie slots using the switches. same crap.... still at x8

    pos motherboard lol
    my 3930k system was fine.

Yeah, sorry did for get about the 980's dual slot end.

PCIe lanes distribution is crappy on the board... would have eventually thought about 3 PCIe cards too, but decided against it. Mind you, you probably will not notice the difference yet I know what you mean. I wasn't happy with the R5E in the first place but at the time picked it because there was a monoblock for it.

Yes, but I'm only using the two 980s, nothing else that uses a PCIe lane, just normal SATA SSDs which is fast enough for me, it's only a gaming rig after all. Haven't come across a benchmark stating you profit greatly from going SATA - PCIe with gaming, I might be wrong though.
