R390x Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered

Hi, i picked up a new system a month ago and yesterday while watching a video in youtube (firefox and windows 10) the screen frozen for a second and i got this message in the event log

"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

the problem is that i can't reproduce it, i can play videogames fine and everything fine, but a bit worried

is a software or hardware problem? i am very confused

disable hw acceleration in FF, see if that helps.

 

yep this or whatever browser your using.....also they had a driver a couple versions back that had a weird glitch and end up doing the same thing...with that being said the current 16.4 series seems good so if your on the current ones its probably just the way 7970/280's dont always play nice with browser acceleration....i recently turned mine back on but ill just turn it back off if its has an issue. It effects the entire series...not just your card

 

first: its not your hardware, be happy

try out disabling hw accel... as mentioned...
but i bet you it won't help. because this is not the widely known flash issue where you get screen corruption when playing fullscreen video with amd gpu.

i've been there and i bet you this problem will occur over and over again.
and to solve it you have to go back to windows 7. i did it as well...

 

I'm suffering rare black screen hangs since i installed 16.3 driver. I turn back to older driver but problem stay. All black screen hangs save a TDR dump file, but i dont discovered the cause yet. The problem happens very rarely, one time in a space of 2-5 days, only while browsing firefox.

I'm afraid that is a hardware problem.

 

Lets face it: Crimson drivers are broken. As soon as AMD realize that this is a fact,better for them. I'm forced to use 15.11 drivers on three desktops and laptop. Some of my friends already swap to Nvidia cards thx to broken drivers. Nvidia have bad drivers too, but this "stop responding" and black screens of death when only hard reset helps are disaster. I have 5770, R7 370, R9 380 and 8670M in laptop and all drivers after 15.11.1 are unusable for me. No DDU, no internet advices, nothing helps.

 

I'm using Chrome with HW acceleration and never had a driver crash or BSOD in two years that I own a 290. So maybe switch to Chrome for a while?

I also used FF before that but I never looked back.

 

It's a well known issue with FF rendering engine.

There are no issues with HW acceleration enabled in Chrome/Chromium based browsers (Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi). Even nV have same issues in FF with some drivers from different driver branches.

 

Well yea on yours its ok...the 7970/280's have a minor occasional flicker bug with browser Hardware acceleration that kinda varies with different drivers. im testing the 16.4.1 with it on and SO FAR ok.....but im prepared to turn it back off if i get flickers again lol. Also who ever said the crimsons are broken is FULL OF **** because it is not.

I'm using FireFox for daily basis along with Nightly/Edge and Old IE11 in WinX x64 Pro and H/W acceleration is stable.
I had some issues but > than a year ago, and never with Nightly/IE/Edge

Now from drivers to drivers is Stable & Smooth as butter even in 2k/4k Videos on YT.

 

Reistall/ or re-Fresh FireFOX x32 !! not x64, Install again Flash/Java x32 & x64/ADOBE Shockwave

If not give FF Nightly a try (basicly its FF but native x64 + Multi-threaded) on top of old FF (plugins install in old FF x32 and they will also work for Nightly).

 

I've had the black screen where monitor just loses signal in FF (HW accel off) and Chrome.I completely blame CCC. I used DDU then did reinstall of 16.4.1 but I unchecked ACP Application, AMD Settings, AMD Settings Branding (and Raptor). Used RadeonPro to adjust graphics and MSI Afterburner for fan control. Have not had a single black screen or glitch since, system seems more responsive, and 3D games have been running great (modded Skyrim, Tomb Raider mainly).
I guess CCC may be required for Eyefinity and VSR if you use those. Maybe can setup Eyefinity and then cancel CCC processes? Thoughts on this?

 

Sorry, but if you are having such serious issues across such a wide range of platforms and GPU's, it's possible that you are doing something wrong. Myself and most other people are finding 16.4.1 and previous Crimson drivers to actually be very good! It's unlikely that this is the case and yet it affects you and your friends so significantly. If it were just one system it's probably the real issue with some other aspect of the system. Overclocks are usually a prime candidate for what otherwise appears to be hardware issues. Do NOT say 'well, it's stable for this therefore all good', because overclock instability doesn't occur that way. It can also be different with different drivers. The new code may be using code that produces an incorrect result due to overclocking that the 15.11 driver didn't do because it didn't have that code.

You could always type in about:config and check out the Firefox internal settings. There are... one or two there. You could also try 64-bit Firefox and corresponding 64-bit Flash etc, but in any case I do believe you are either trolling, or you and your friends are blaming AMD way too quickly for something that you are obviously doing incorrectly...

 

Yeah systems can be a little funny. If it works for 99.999 percent of the people out there it makes it difficult to track down the cause of the issue. Didn't think RadeonPro worked with Windows 10 and the latest drivers. Another question is about the need to adjust the fan profiles using MSI Afterburner, are they an issue? Usually adjusting them is related to video card overclocking.

 

I've noticed display driver crashes recently too and thought it's due to new drivers (started happening after I installed 16.3.2 and newer versions), rolling back had no effect.
Until I discovered it was a recent update to the battle.net desktop app that is actually causing it (they updated their chromium package).
Might be the same case for some of you.
So far running it with --disable-gpu seems to work but haven't tested for long enough.

My black screen with firefox disappear since i leave it without any AMD driver installed. The only problem i cannot play any game this way.

 

I get this fault with you tube and firefox if i install msi afterburner. uninstalling afterburner removes the black screen fault when watching youtube

 

Had the same problem. Been running battle.net with --disable-gpu for some time now and haven't had display drivar crash since then, but i noticed, that loading news section for games takes longer time..

 

Have you tried running a graphics card memory test?

 

I experienced this issue when my 280x would overheat. My resolution was to reduce clock speeds down a bit. Never had the error reported again. The error and game crash would occur during intense graphics use. I later found when cleaning my PC the overheating was due to one of the three fans had stopped working. Replaced it, clocks back to stock and never encountered the error again
