I got some when I was 12, but only wore them for a few weeks, as they were unruly and felt weird. I was also advised by my father, and some of my uncles that if I wore them to much, it'd deteriorate my eye-sight without glasses, so that in 30 years, I'd be blind without them.

Digging through some stuff, I put them on for old times sake, abit tight, but wow, it was...enlightening to say the least. Everything was sharper, clearer. Like a layer of fog had been lifted.

Imagine it like no AA VS 4x Super-Sampling AA.(lol)

With the advent of laser eye surgery being more practical these days, but still freaks the living hell out of me after my TEACHER told me about someone who ripped their eye lids off by scratching under the black eye cover in their sleep.

I was wondering about this age old myth, Google was...less than informative. Alot of jibber jabber, but no clear line.

What are peoples opinions over this? I read that your eyes become dependent on the glasses, so your eye muscles weaken and you can't see without them years down the road. I remember my vision was 20 / 40 when I got tested...so not sure what it'd be now.

Kinda was a random thing to put them on, but walked around my house a little and was like "whoa" lol. It's nice to see clearly, but I don't really like wearing them, I don't want my eyesight to weaken without them. Laser Eye Surgery is not only expensive, but as said before, scary as ****.

    Thoughts, opinions, facts? Thanks.

I had a similar experience, I hated glasses and never wore them until I got into high school and my grades were falling as a result of not being able to see the black board.

The moment I walked outside with a new pair of glasses I was in shock and couldn't believe how detailed everything was in the distance. Seeing pine needles on a tree from 50ft away was amazing to me.

I never wore glasses out in public since then, I switched to contacts..

PS: DO NOT GET LASIK SURGERY, the majority of patients end up with chronic dry eye, poor night vision, halos in the eye and sometimes become blind or have worst sight then before..

I had glasses about the same age as the OP and started only wearing them to read etc but soon got bored of that and wore them full time. Im always still amazed how sharp my vision gets when my prescription changes and i get a new pair of glasses.

Tried contacts but couldnt get on with putting them in all the time otherwise loved them, my sister has had laser surgery and says she loves it, she did have complications after but not serious and they have been sorted out now.

Id personally not consider laser eye surgery unless i was 100% sure it was safe but the idea appeals.

It's the other way around as far as I know. Without glasses your brain becomes accustomed to seeing blurry things, so it/your eyes doesn't even try to correct it.

I'm blessed with great vision, but both my wife and her sister have glasses.
Her sister got Radial keratotomy surgery cheaper than my wife got new glasses. She went from bifocals to no glasses at all, and is very happy.
I know it sounds scary, but it may be the better choice.

I've got glasses from when I was 12, and ditched them when I was 15, and instead I got Contacts, and I am still using those.

My eye sight is still the EXACT meassurement it was when I was 12.

The thing is, you can have a 'lazy' eye, wich means that eye is working for both of the eyes, and one isn't working really,

That means that the 1 strong eye gets tired and becomes worse and worse untill you are (particially)blind

If you get glasses with the prescription that your eyes have, that means, that you will see EXACTLY the way "normal" people with "blessed" vision see....

Now WHY would that make YOUR eyes degenerative, and not the perfect vision people?

You can even turn it around... Because of that you didn't wear glasses while you should have wore them... Your eyes have been 'stressed' to see as good as they can, while they couldn't.... This could have actually made them worse...

Get good glasses or get yourself sweet contacts... But first let your eyes be measured by a good eye-doctor.

Why not reduce everything to the basics: if your eye doctor says you need to use glasses, use them. That's what he studied for. If you are not convinced, you can see as many eye doctors as you want to get other opinions.

This is the way i see it too, if you pardon the pun.

I only started wearing glasses at 28, and now when i take them off, it feels like they are worse now without them, than before i had them.
But i think its more to do with your eyes adjusting, and getting used to better images.

I know a few people who have had laser eye surgery and they say it changed their life and was the best money they ever spent, and none of them have horror stories.

I'm still wanting to wait, One, for the prices to go down, and Two, to see if anyone i know, eyes fall out:wanker:

You ever considered contact lenses, i never thought i would like them, but it becomes part of your routine like shaving etc..and call also give you a "better" image than glasses will.

contact lenses have their own set of problems as well

glasses are much easier for just everyday use

It's true.... Your normal eyesight DOES get worse if you start using Glasses. My Dad (yep, he's still around) gave me his old reading Glasses because I was having a bit of trouble seeing text. Now, I can barely see any at all without them.

I've got the 'Battlefield Bad Company 2' Retail DVD case right here and I can only just make out 'Battlefield'.

I'd advise you not to wear them if you can see ok without them.

(The text on this Dark Skin doesn't stand out very well to me)

No. That is not true. Your eyesight gets worse regardless of that do you use glasses or not.

    I beg to differ.

I was reffering to my own experience. It's true that your eyesight does get worse with age, but in my case it got much worse and at a faster rate when I started wearing them.

I've had conacts on since I've been... 13 (im 16 now) and my vision has barely changed. Other than that's only 3 years I'd say false. My parents arent blind and they've worn glasses since younger than me.

Sry dude but that it utter horse mince, the brain is fantastically capable of compensating for errors in our visual system and a side effect of that is that people with poor eye sight tend to squint and screw up their eyes, most of them do it without even noticing. The other great thing is just how quickly the brain adapts to new errors in our visual system, anyone with those floating blind spots will tell you they appear and then fade after a few days, that's not because they have gone away it is because the brain has adapted and filled in the blanks. The same is true of someone wearing glasses for the first time, they will stop screwing up their eyes as they become use to the glasses thus when they come to take them off it gives the false sense that their eyes have gotten worse when what has actually happened is they have stopped squinting and screwing up their eyes to compensate for their poor vision.

I dont think squnting hurts your eyes... but do yourself a favor man. Go out and get some nice contacts to wear all the time. You'll thank yourself. Every time I get my prescription adjusted its like seeing Full 1080p HD for the first time :D.

Eventhough I do not see 100%, last time I had an eye apointment with an eye specialist, 3months ago, I was seeing 90/100 (%).

He recommended that I used special glasses for computer/reading activities.
Also had headache problems when I was younger due to stressed and tired eyesight.

Yeah, i would refuse to watch anything or game if i didn't have glasses or contacts, makes doing either a much more enjoyable experience, though i did sell all my DVD's as i couldn't watch them anymore lol.

Glasses are fine for straight line indoor activities like watching TV or gaming, though if your short sighted glasses will shrink the screen slightly.

Contacts have maintenance and cost issues, but once your used them its fine, and there are no issues with thinking shrinking and unlike glasses you can use them in all weathers.

HAHAHA! Are you serious!? If the surgey made the majority of peoples eye sight worse do you honestly think they'd allow it!?

99% of patients develop no complications, and for the 1% who do... Most of the issues are sorted out in post op. Myself, and a number of friends have all had our eyes done and none of us have had any issues!
