Question about temps on 2700k OC

    I have put the CPU to 4.8 using the BIOS easy mode overclock. Basically it did everything for me. I could pick between 4.1 to 4.8 I think. Handy as I don't know about voltages etc... I was on 4.6 but just trying 4.8.

    In CPUID Hardware monitor is say my temps idle are 32deg. I just installed Prime 95 64bit and just hit test. Did not change anything (it was the Blend test).

    Now CPUID HWM is showing (after 20 mins)
    Core 0: 60 (max 62),
    Core 1: 66 (max 68),
    Core 2: 66 (max 69),
    Core 3: 61 (max 63)
    and the last one which I have no idea what it is (please tell me!) is Package and that reads at 68deg (max 71).

    Now can you guys tell me if this is ok?

    Like I said, what is package? I don't see Core 4 is that package?

    I know your meant to run these tests for hours but I just wanted to see what happened if I ran the top test ( ).

    Now my temp are

    Core 0 66 (max67)
    Core 1 74 (max 74)
    Core 2 74 (max 77)
    Core 3 67 (max 67)
    Package 77 (max 78)

    Guess these temps are too high for the test? For gaming?

    Just trying out BF3. My max temp is 58deg on a full 64 player room (Firestorm). Will edit this if it changes.

    Just went into Caspian Border and max any core goes to is 60deg. Package says 60deg max.

    Temps seem ok, except from cores #1 and #2 being quite hotter than others. Is thermal compound properly applied?
    Run Linpack (LinX, OCCT, IBT, etc.) and see how it goes. Keep temps below 80C and that should be fine. What cooler are you using?

    There is no core 4, because cores are counted from 0. Core 3 is actually 4th core.


    Also, could you wrap that report in a spoiler?

    I put a pea sized blob on the CPU then put the cooler on top. The fan I have is a Nuctua NH-U12P. Will try the wrap thing and change my PC specs.

    You think I should take the cooler off and re-apply?

    EDIT 1: I can't seem to find that wrap option you are on about.

    EDIT 2: So what is package?

    You need to put thermal paste on and spread in evenly across IHS.. Only then put cooler on.

    Package temp is probably whole CPU temperature. My CPU package temp is always the same as Core Max temp.

    Thanks for that! I just tried Core Temp and RealTemp and they are saying 65,77,77,65 @ 4.8.

    Will re-apply the paste tommorow maybe. Backed down to 4.6 for now. Thing is I heard that thermal paste spreads and gets better over a number of days? Well this paste has only been on this CPU for a day.

    What kind/brand of thermal Paste are you using? Different brands have different amount of time before they set. ex Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) Takes 200 hours.

    What ever came with the cooler. Will check soon. It's a top cooler and apparently top paste.

    So should I wait a while? Like I say, it's only been just over a day. I put a pea sized blob in the centre.

    EDIT: Found the paste. It says Noctua NT-H1. Premium grade thermal paste.

    (my personal experience with 2600k and 2700k was kinda bad)

    They do? Package temp is too high....78C = dangerous

    Package = temp measured from motherboard sensor. Should be kept below 72C.

    Package = CPU. Package temp is the same temp we were all looking at with Pentium4/Athlon64 and older processors.

    I'm on 4.6 now and Package is max at 65deg on In place large FFT torture test.

    73deg on small FFT. Surely nothing I run will stress out the CPU this much so I would be ok at 4.6?

    78C is not that dangerous, IMO. CPU isn't going to melt, shutdown or degrade very fast at this temp. It's ok for P95 stress. Unless you're running P95 24/7/365 in the background while playing games and doing other stuff. 60C while playing BF3 isn't too high either.

    In normal gaming at 3.6 or 3.8 max package temp is 60deg

    Doing that can introduce bubbles and air gaps when placing the cooler on, causing heat build up and hot spots. His method with the pea in the middle the apply cooler is technically correct, I've yet to see a cooler that didn't spread the paste evenly after placing the load on top.

    What is IHS? What I will do in a week or so is take the cooler off and check the spread of the paste and report back with a pic maybe. Then, obviously I will wipe clean and reapply as needed.

    Shouldn't be a need for that, but checking won't hurt and neither will a reapplication. However I don't like the noctua paste myself, tend to use Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Ceramique if it's not a really heavily OC'd machine. Though I'll be using something different with my new PC :D

    BTW IHS = Integrated Heat Spreader (or the big piece of metal on the chip that hides the actual CPU core ;) )
