Hardware for mere consumers wasn't there. Got any friends who got 10 Gbit running at home?

No, you wouldn't even reach 1/10th of the bandwidth cap, 10Gb would allow up to 10000mbs, at least in theory and if it was a perfect connection and what not. For you and about 99% of the world still a 1GB Lan connector is more than enough since that in theory allows up to 1000mbs(give or take some)

This makes sense for use-cases that have a high amount of intranet data transfers... an a switch that can manage 10 Gbps, which today is still not common at all (heck, the cheap 100 Mbps ones are sadly still fairly common nowadays).

Very few people would make full use of this, mostly great for businesses or that one guy who happens to have a direct link to a service provider :p
