    My q9550 is 50-58c on idle.

    i was playing left 4 dead, Cpu usage was at 20%, but my tempratures where at 75-81, after a while my computer screen turned light blue (not bsod) with no text whatsoever, i pressed restart, gave me a loud beep, so i turned off the computer, after that it worked fine...could this be overheating? i seated the fan correctly, but i smudged a small corner of thermal paste, is this the culprit?

    I would try reset the cooler sometimes its stable but till not contacting the cpu.

    how much thermal paste did you put on?

    i put on a little bit in the middle and let the cooler when clamped on spread it out.

    im using the stock cooler, didnt add any extra thermal paste. the paste was below the fan.

    for gods sake, my its 62c on idle, theres something wrong here.

    In dubai, finding thermal grease is...near impossible.
    i cant replace the grease already included :X

    jeez, thats hot... I think you should consider a 3rd party cooler lol... a good one thats cheap is the arctic ARCTIC COOLING AC-Freezer XTREME if your case can handle it... which it probably can because my can and I have a tiny case!

    or if you case is pretty wide and you can fit a big cooler try something like the sunbeam core contact freezer.

    do the 3rd party fans come with pre applied thermal grease?

    Yea grab a after marker cooler and some thermal grease. You will notice a big drop in temp.

    edit;
    Yes most do come with some grease, but you should op for something like AS5 / OCZ Freeze / MX2 which are pretty good thermal grease compounds.

    Alright thanks guys...but its still weird, overheating should shutdown my computer, not freeze it with all the fans running.

    well, some motherboards do have 2 features in bios. I believe its called T1 and T2. One of them stops all the threads running to the cpu to cut the temps so you dont kill ur cpu, and the other shuts it down completely. Im not sure if thats right, but I think so...

    Intel says 71.4c max CPU temp. TJmax should be 100c but thats core temps not cpu. I just O.C mine to 3.83g with zelman 9700 AS5 core temps it 79 79 75 74 cpu temp hit 69 max full load. Idle 44 44 40 40 and 25 for cpu. Check your voltages might be set to high. Im at 1.325 in bios. But like everyone else said get a 3rd party heatsink and fan. Most heatsink and fans dont come with thermal past if they do i wouldnt use it get some Artic Silver 5 thermal past. If you remove your stock one and try and reset it you have to remove old past and apply some new stuff.

    Well...looks like i found the culprit...a nest of viruses and trojans.

    after removing these pests my temps went back to 30-35 on idle and 50-60 on full load :/.
