    Which to get? I can get a Q9300 for $500, and a Q6600 for $260.

Is the Q9300 really twice as good as the Q6600? Does the 1333FSB on the Q9300 make up for it's 6M L2 compared to the 8M on the Q6600?

Also, would you consider the Q6700 to be waay overpriced at over $600?

Forget it. I've been reading, so I think I may as well just spend $240 on a E8400 an' clock the hell outta it.

Can ASRock boards handle a hell clocking?

Before I saw your second post, I was going to say yes, the Q6700 is way overpriced, but so is the Q9300 you were looking at. Q6600's are still fantastic processors, and I'm about ready to give up on a Q9300 myself in favor of one.

LOL, no AsRocks cannot hellclock. It can barely do 2.85. I'm getting an EX38-DS4 next week, but I'm thinking about the CPU now so I can get it next month.

Yeh, the Q6700 is stupid. I'm sending emails to a few stores to see if I can negotiate a price. I'll just throw the price of a Q660 and aQ9300 in thier face and see what they say. Pfft. $600.

But some guys reckon Qs are great. Others agree, but then they say save your monies and OC the E8400.

What money would one be 'saving' by doing that?

Alright. Q me. So back to the original, 6600 or 9300?

    QFT? That's a new one...

Well, I've been looking, and the way the benches tell it, Q6600s are good at apps, and E8500s are good at games (and OC). And if I have a board which can take a 1600FSB, why not get the E8500. Or save $100 and lose 0.5 multiplier and get an E8400. :(

It depends on how much you want out of an overclock. The E8 series, you could get 4 ghz and up most likely. On two cores. The Q6 series, you could get about in the mid 3 range, problably even close to 4 ghz. In four cores. You do get the advantage of 2 extra cores in the Q6 series, but this would only benefit in games that take advantage of multiple cores. Where as with the E8 series, I don't want to say it's easier to get 4 ghz, but it's worth getting 4 ghz out of it.

Most games that are due to be in development, and a lot that already are in development are quad threaded. Hell, Farcry 2 has 8 threads, and supports Skulltrail, so the quad threaded and octothreaded apps arent as far away as you think they are.

go for the Q6600 man. a Q9300 is just not worth it for its price. But thats just me. If you have the money to burn and you want the latest, go ahead.

LOL I said "quoted for truth", meaning that I also believe that the Q6600 is worth every penny.

Damn you, Jdoggg12! You threw yet another spanner into my mind-works!?!

Now I am thinking about something which has never even crossed my mind. Is the E3110 exactly the same, ie: OC potential?

Keep in mind that I have pretty much made up mind to pair this with an X38 chipset for XFire.

Yes, its the same thing. There is anecdotal evidence that the Xeons are mildly better chips since theyre designed for servers.

If the choice is between Q6600 and Q9300, I would go for the Q6600. The 9300 has a crappy 7.5 multi so that will put a strain on your ram and mobo in OC'ing while the Q6600 multi is an easy 9. $500 for the Q9300? Get outta here... :p

Go for the Q6600. I'm annoyed because I can't hit 3.4GHz on my board.
