Selling them to miners is one thing, but shops also taking advantage with their high prices is another.

Thank you for mentioning the truth. I read way too little complaints about shops an e-tailers actually making the most profit off this.

I love how some people still claim that mining has no influence on the availability of gpus...

The COVID explanation worked last year. But certainly not now. It's been over a year now most people who needed to buy a new computer for remote work already did (pre-build or laptop) because they had to ... to work. Companies also updated their stuffs. My company updated the whole infrastructure couple of months ago already. All coworkers already bought what they needed to work. In fact since most people already updated their computers because they had to for remote work the demand should technically be lower outside of gamers who can't buy a GPU but that demands was always there to begin with.

Chip shortage i dunno apparently the sales of GPU increased so that doesn't work. The reality is for the most part it's miners like it was a couple of years ago. It's not the first time it happens. In fact cryptocurrency started to lose value and drum roll cards are starting to be available again. You can buy a card right now in Canada. Obviously at scalper price but they are not selling like they were 5-6 months ago and the main, if not only, reason is miners don't buy them anymore. Since scalpers can't sell their actual stock they'll stop to buy new cards and probably somewhere fall 2021 or spring 2022 cards will be back at msrp (if crypto keep losing value).

Obviously miners want us to believe their role is minimal. The mining advocate are everywhere and there's a couple on this board. But one must be naive to believe it. It's for the most part mining. Little bit of COVID too it certainly did not help, the cold war 2.0 with china doesn't help either, but it's not like the first time miners create havoc within the gpu market. There's no reality where someone buy a stupid RTX 3080 to work with MS office. The lack of GPU is not even a problem for most companies and workers out there they can just put a GT 1030 in their PC or use intel iGPU and they are good to go. If you're not rendering something or encoding a video any GPUs or iGPU will do the job even an basic one.

Only if it's not hacked. Would not be surprised at all if people buy this card hoping it will get hacked cause well everything get hacked at some point.

The chip shortage is real, with even government representatives contacting TSMC to do something about it, but there only was a serious GPU chip shortage because of the miner effect. It's not only because professional miners buying everything they could, but like some people here at Guru3D have said, even part-time miners could pay their new video card fully or partially by mining. What does this mean? It means people who otherwise might not have invested the money, did invest because they could get back some of the investment. If such a method didn't exist, many of them wouldn't have upgraded their card this time, right now. The crypto scheme spread its nasty tentacles around in many ways.

In a few months, there will be a reckoning when a glut of these used cards hit the market and retailers can't sell their stocks. Watch nVidia and AMD screech about losses and having to lay people off.

For people who work in the "back end" of production, we all knew what happened. Nobody lines up at Fry's (rest in peace) or Microcenter to buy 700K GPU for mining, except for <GTA3 Catalina Voice> "small time" </GTA3 Catalina Voice> or personal users.

Many or most of those orders were placed directly to the vendor (brands) or distributors for bulk buy up front. To even not think this happens is not waking up in reality.

    ---

After the spec release for S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2... I was curious about how much a GTX 1060 with 6GB would be, I mean it's a pretty old gpu... they should be going for cheap maybe I can get one to meet the minimum specs for stalker 2.

Yeah nope, used ones starting at $400, brand new ones for $600 in my country.

AMD card are still ATI cards to me just most the time I correct my self.

I am sure there alot people that still refer to them as ATI seeing ATI was just bought by AMD and continued to develop just under rebranding name of AMD

Not sure if being sarcastic or what but ATI was bought out by Advanced Micro Devices aka AMD

I did really stop call ATI ATI till about maybe 7 years ago? where i start call them AMD for most part cause to me it will really always be ATI
