So they barely advertised the sequel at all which in turn produced poor sales compared to the first and so then they shut down the studio?

    Riiiiiight.

At least the PC versions release remains safe...

I already bought the 360 version but I'm still going to buy the PC version as I planned to all along in support of Radical and the IP which has always been a firm favourite. Not that it will mean much now. :*(

    To add

It's ironic then that I only picked up the console version of the game recently and have been enjoying the hell out of it in preparation for the hopefully superior PC version. And I honestly cannot think of a single reason from my own experience why anyone who enjoyed the first won't want to join Heller and his bag of meat sack killing tricks. If my recommendation to do so isn't enough then surely the fact that you will be playing something the likes of which you may never see again simply has to be. **** that hurts to say.

As for the demise of Radical obviously my heart goes out to them in terms of being able to move on while the Prototype IP joins the likes of Stalker as a niche title that had plenty of passion behind it from both fans and the devs alike. But it's an industry that is about making money and these days if 3 million sales isn't reached as a bare minimum it seems the devs are doomed to close not long after. Games are becoming more and more expensive to develop and returns more and more difficult to come by especially if it's an IP like Prototype that doesn't cater to "a broad audience" as Activision put it. Until one day all there will be left is CoD and the ****wads who keep it steam rolling along as if it's a game that changed the industry for the better.

Devs I follow with a passion is slowly turning into how my interest in musical bands used to be ie two albums or less and they are no more. Goodbye Prototype, I shall miss you.

I think the biggest issue is replay value. As much as i hate to bring up that dreaded word "Economy"... i have to say it's true. With people spending less money these days, buying a game that lasts is starting to play more of a role than buying a game that's worthwhile. I know there are plenty of people that love Diablo 3... but i, personally, wish i'd waited for Guild Wars 2 (and might even try seeing if there's any way of getting a refund through Blizzard, though since i didn't purchase it directly from them, i doubt that). The gameplay in D3 IS fun.... but to be honest, i'd rather have an RPG where roaming is possible. I enjoyed Diablo 2/LoD... but D3 just doesn't sit right with me. I played it fairly heavily the first week or so... but i can't even remember the last time i actually launched it. Two different characters, one wiz, one monk... neither are level 40 if i remember correctly.

Prototype 2 is a blast to play... but once you beat it... there isn't really a whole lot going for it. There aren't different good/evil paths to go down like in Infamous... there aren't multiple endings.... granted just beating the sh*t out of stuff after you finish the game can be entertaining, it's just not something that draws me back to the game.

This can be decrypted now in various regions, doesn't seem bad so far.

Just started though so there's not much else I can say at the moment, pretty well optimized as I see it, expected worse though maybe I'm just a bit negative, controls and such work fine and it seems like it could be a good game. :)

Sometimes I wish I lived in Sweden as you seem to get games days before anyone else, even the Yanks.

No the release date over here is actually the 27th as the rest of Europe, US, AU and I think possibly the Asian regions release date was today but differed by a few hours each from what I've read but I used a pretty common VPN tunnel solution ( http://www.your-freedom.net/index.php?id=172 ) and made Steam decrypt the content that way.

Been using it for years now, Valve doesn't seem to mind since it's discussed on their forums even (Though why should they since you have to own the game for it to work.) so it's pretty widespread by now though the methods differ a bit.

LIVE titles are much more difficult due to ZDP protection so there's normally no chance of decrypting those early, Origin doesn't release the cd-key and thus let you activate the game before the release date in your region either and that's pretty protected as well, Gamersgate which I use most for retail games tend to vary a bit but also normally don't give the serial key out before release day though the download can at times be enabled in advance, earlier due to some bug with their old software games were unlocked when you bought them but that's been fully fixed now though the site has had a number of other improvements along with these types of security improvements. :)

Keystores and such can also be quite fast, particularly from the eastern-European and Asian regions but I've never used those services since it's risky due to that they keys can be blocked, it's not that common but it happens now and again and every time it does there's usually quite a lot of posts on the official forums for that publisher about it. :D
(Usually more reputable sites gives refunds when that happens as I understood it so the damage is pretty minimal.)

EDIT: For Steam you can usually query in advance when a game will be released by using the country code tags in the URL such as this.

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/115320/

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/115320/?cc=us (Released)
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/115320/?cc=uk (27th)
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/115320/?cc=au (Released)
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/115320/?cc=se (27th)

That said even if Steam might be quicker due to this method of unlocking I normally when possible prefer to use other sites since the price is normally more expensive if bought directly from Steam, still games over here are pretty high priced compared to US or UK pricings albeit still quite OK compared to say Australian price conversions and certain other regions.
(10 - 15% saved normally so it's not that much of a difference but any amount is useful, games are also slowly climbing up to a above 50 Euro standard price it seems and some titles are now bordering around 60 Euro but it still sells quite well it would appear so this standard is likely here to stay.)

I'm surprised that interest in this game is so low that this thread had already disappeared onto the second page of the Games forum!

I should be getting my retail disc copy today from ShopTo.net but was wondering whether the game used Steamworks or not? If it does then I won't be able to play it until midnight tonight at the earliest.

Also, the first Prototype had an annoying-as-hell bug that mean I could not use my native resolution of 1920x1200 (and with MSAA) without using a tweak that involved running it in maximized windowed mode. It occurred because the game was written before cards with 1.5 GB+ of VRAM existed so it detects my GTX 680s as having less than 512 MB each and limits the resolutions to 1280x800 or lower.

Because of this workaround and the fact the game is running in a borderless window in effect, it ran at an appalling 35 fps which for GTX 680 SLI is really pathetic. I'm hoping that this issue does not happen with the sequel.

I believe it uses Steamworks but I am not 100% sure though I think the retail version goes via Steam as well.

People have reported various performance issues and other bugs but I've noticed no real problems, it crashed once during a larger fight but since then there's been nothing, performance is great too at near constant 60 frames per second, now in the last area of the game due to the numerous NPC's it's a little bit lower.
(Though people report 30 FPS locked with stuff like a GTX680 and a 3980X CPU or what their product name was, TotalBiscuit I think their name was had a report about the game and they totally dissed it due to these types of problems and control issues, speaking of that there might be some mouse acceleration present but there's no way to tweak the game from what I've found so there's not much that can be done presently, unsure about scaling and such for monitors but I'm at 1920x1200 and it works OK here, some might perhaps prefer a bit higher field of view value perhaps but I don't know what the game uses by default, 65 perhaps?)

Finished the main storyline missions, overall I enjoyed the game though it might perhaps get a bit repetitive after a while, around 15 or so hours of playing with mostly doing the story and some exploration and side missions for various unlocks and that sort of thing.

Also seems Rick found the command line arguments for the game. :)

I personally won't be buying this seems as the people who worked hard on making it are now jobless and the money from sales will go directly to activation.

I'm surprised that this game has a game profile for it in the NVIDIA control panel with the 304.79 drivers but no actual SLI flag. For now I've used the one from the first Prototype unless someone knows a better one to use?

Waiting for the game to unlock. Alas, Activision have decided on an 8am unlock time here in the UK rather than the usual midnight which is disappointing as I was hoping to try the game before I went to bed. :(

The first one was repetitive, but i really liked it( never finished it though ), i dont expect this to be much different, although less repetitive would be good.

I played this game this game this morning after a lengthy (10 minutes at least) decryption process and from the 45 minutes I've mustered on it so far it seems very decent. The good news is that the game loaded perfectly, even setting the resolution to the native 1920x1200 (and it's fullscreen too!) of my display which is always a sign that the developers have coded the game properly to take into account the PC's hardware. How many other sub-standard ports boot up set to 1280x720 or some other ghastly low resolution?

The game had defaulted to mostly maxed out settings except for Shadows and Prop Draw Distance which were set to Medium so I changed them to High. I use the Xbox 360 controller so I only had to enable vibration (odd that it was disabled by default though) then I was good to go. The game runs at 60 fps during cutscenes and in interior locations but hovers between 45 and 60 fps outside in the city depending on how much stuff is present. It's perfectly playable but I suspect the SLI profile I'm using - the same one for Prototype - is not optimal for this game. There's no stuttering so the game is smooth (I have motion-blur enabled) and I didn't see any glitches either. That game works as it should do so I cannot understand where these accusations of the game being a lazy, shoddy, unoptimized console port are coming from personally. The title "bad port" is something I'd reserve for Ubisoft's atrociously broken Ghost Recon: Future Soldier which was clearly pushed out before it was finished. Prototype 2 at least feels polished and visually the game is a step up over the last one, which fun as it was, looked like a PS2 game in all honesty.

The gameplay seems to be exactly the same as before so far but it's entertaining. Besides I can no longer play the first Prototype due to the fact my native resolution isn't recognised due to a bug in the VRAM detection (it basically sees 2 GB cards as having less than 512 MB). The workaround is to run it in a maximised window but performance is very poor (30-35 fps) but it's the only one which allowed me to set AA. Anyway I've uninstalled that game now as the sequel means it is effectively redundant now.

Looking forward to playing this more tonight. Sandbox games are always good fun even if they do invariably get repetitve.

Well at max settings I'm getting 30fps on average in most areas and that's with vsync turned off. :3eyes:

Also if anyone here is getting the black borders no matter your res try the following in your Steam launcher...

I've found that changing any settings in-game at all, including audio/bindings/video/etc. can screw up your FPS. I've been having to alt-tab out of the game and back in to get my FPS back to where it belongs. Sometimes my FPS drops as low as ~15FPS after changing a setting, and sometimes down to ~30. After alt-tabbing, it goes back up to the ~50-60 range. I've also found that setting Shadows to high cuts performance just about in half, so make sure Shadows are set to Medium or Low. There is no SLI compatibility flag for the game, but I am trying to get some sort of SLI performance gain worked out. I'll come back and report my findings on SLI when i am done.
