E8200 obviously. But if he could stretch his budget a few bucks he'd be much better off with a 8400...

OP, what mainboard do you have and have you checked it's compatibility list? I see your current processor and had to ask this.

The E7400 has a maximum 3 mb L2 cache with a 1066 FSB. the E8200 is rated at 6mb L2 cache with a maximum 1333 FSB. The choice, if his mainboard will accept it would be the E8200. It has more "beef" and should serve him well until he could afford a Q9XXX quad , if his board will accept that. Plus depending on the board, he may be able to clock it up a little as well which should yield more performance given that he has adequate cooling. Could you post his mainboard for us? A little dilligent searching may behoove him as well as the E8400 isn't really too much more expensive than the E8200. Most places here in the US have them for about 169 USD.

    E8200.

Larger cache and faster front side bus are clear winners in this case. A little overclocking (if even needed) would negate the other processor having a faster stock speed.

The larger cach will help load programs faster. The faster FSB will also help out as well. The slower MHz speed will probally be only notcable in benchmarks. I would go with the e8200 myself.
