Sony warned that the PlayStation 5 will continue to be in short supply until 2022, suggesting that the company will have limitations in its ability to drive sales targets for its latest game console....

Has absolutely nothing to do with scalpers.

It's a ridiculous situation to think that in this day, you can't buy the latest consoles and video cards.

Jokes on those who bought it from scalpers, paying overpriced and fuelling the madness we are in.
I can't understand how not a single government has made re-selling of new products illegal, or how companies like Sony and Microsoft that sell at a loss aren't mad they're losing money while people are actually willing to buy them more expensive.
Just raise the f*ing prices you dumb asses...

Wait, so if someone bought a PS5 (or an Nvidia card or whatever) and they realized after a few months that they don't have time for it so might as well sell it on (or need the money), well might as well get ****ed?

anyone got any numbers on PS4 increases in units sold because of this? would be interesting to see what impact this had on those units.

It's not something that should be touched by the laws. It would be the ultimate kind of nanny state behavior. People are utterly capable of deciding for themselves if they want to pay scalpers for entertainment. If nobody buys from scalpers, scalpers don't exist. It's an entirely different thing when, for example, in the USA some shady scumbag manages to snatch the only license for a particular medicine and then raises the price suddenly by 600%. People who depend on that medicine for their dear lives haven't got a choice. Actually I don't know if the same could happen in other countries as well, but we only hear about the cases in the USA. That's the kind of scalping (decent) governments actually pay attention to. But who's going to die or suffer if they can't get the latest gaming console or couldn't get a ticket to a popular band's concert? Just let the scalper sit on a dozen consoles or a wad of concert tickets soon to expire.

I am in no real hurry for a PS5 or XSX anyway and i can quite happily wait up until 2023 before i look at them, and that is not too far away as i think 2021 is already a complete damp squb as this pandemic hopefully start to wind down towards the end of it....although i did just treat myself to a pair of Valve knuckles for VR. lol

Unfortunately, the joke is on us. This problem won't go away until people unanimously agree to stop paying beyond MSRP.

Has everything to do with botting by scalpers and the insecurity of online retailers. When one consumer has over 20 PS5's and resells them for a higher price over MSRP, it screws with supply and demand. Even if they sent them to the stores, retailers were jacking them.

No problem, i can wait. And maybe they will release a smaller version, so even better.

As for scalpers, they are just taking advantage out of idiots. I don´t like it but people are the ones to blame here. For example i know a store that has an "used" PS5 with disc on sale for 900€. I could act like an idiot and buy it but i won´t do it, of course.

People have to be responsible for their own actions. Or vote with their wallets.

there are separate issues being conflated.
scalping is a problem, but it doesn't decrease availability, if something's for sale it's available.

    the real problem
is the same that's across the board that i spoke to last spring - shitty forecasting and revisions by component manufacturers and AIB due to Covid beginning in November 2019.

Sony (much more than M$) knew that they needed a massive initial production run from AMD/TSMC and that order was being fulfilled (with all componentry) during Covid because everything was already in place. mind you 7+ million units sold so this was a roaring success.

the problem everyone else from Tesla to GM to Bosch to Nvidia to AMD to Samsung, to TSMC etc has is the subcontractor supply pipeline had gone dry and it's a bitch to restart.

and of course at the same time new ethereum protocols and substantially better hash rates across next gen gpu's are creating a new(ish) demand for a niche product.
and let's face it - our hobby is playing with niche products.

so to add to the misery, the expansion of a niche product to a (in terms of sales) mainstream product will have its own bumps in the road regardless of the subcontractors ills.

the good news is things are slowly getting better. the GPU's are no longer unobtainium and the horrific scalping is getting less horrific, but it will still scare your momma.
cases in point, both RX 30xx and 6900/6800xt are actually in supply, if still over priced. the 6700xt and RX3060 are readily available, if over priced.
the point is once there is actual supply the demand by inflationary agents (miners) decreases as they've already paid what the units are worth to them.
the sad state of GPU's is that the market for miners has to be saturated before gamers actually get a whiff.
the restoration of the supply chain is very good news for everyone, especially as that will keep next gen consoles from being converted to mining rigs like some laptops.

Truth is trickling out...like I (we) originally thought--the scarcity of RTX-3k's and RX-6ks is a scarcity of manufacturing as opposed to "scalpers" and alternative uses for high-end gaming GPUs.

Yeah no crap, people being locked up for daring to sell something for a profit especially a freaking video game GASP THE HORROR!!!
ITS A VIDEO GAME SYSTEM, if you dont want to pay more and/or can wait, then dont buy them. So tired of all these cry babies. Ive had people give me stuff and ive turned right around and made several hundred off it, do it all the time actually. I dont force anyone to buy anything, its called being a responsible adult and some have more money to blow than others, either way, its not my problem.

I used to sell all my hardware to a Polish friend in work, he kept some of the gear and sold on the rest.
I'd sell it to him very reasonable, basically friends rates however ..
The man was always quick with the funds and also advanced me one time when i went to Holland for a couple weeks.
Zero stress, always friendly cup of tea, chilling with family you can't beat selling on to friends.
To hell with those making tidy profit from friends.
