Recent reports suggest that Sonys PlayStation 4 may already be in the works with suppliers revealing that production could start by the end of 2011 with Foxconn and Pegatron at the helm of assembly....

Batteries...wtf, it's a console not a hybrid vehicle. So basically it's a laptop without a screen and input device.

How is shutting off mains power, then using a battery for 5 mins, then I assume switching back to mains power going to save any power at all ?

Once it resumes mains power, it will have to power the console AND recharge the battery, using more power than just gaming would without the battery.

You can't make energy out of nothing ! It will end up using the same amount as one without a battery would.

Eco-friendly... What does adding batteries to console which doesnt need those have to do with eco-friendlyness ? PS4 is going to sell very well, like other PlayStations, total amount of useless batteries is going to be very high. Meh.

I didn't read the article, but perhaps the battery could be a kind of protection device so say your power goes out the system doesn't shut down and you lose all your unsaved progress and/or the files don't get corrupt. Long shot, I know, but just throwing the idea out there :p

That was my thought. Realistically it will use more too. I mean, charging a battery is definitely not 100% efficient. All that heat that comes off of it is showing you that right there. Plus, all those components needed to make a battery definitely aren't green.

It always bugs me when companies label products that include batteries as "Eco-Friendly", it should be considered an oxymoron.

Concept designers are exactly that, they design the concept and then hand it over to the engineers who come back and tell them that most of the stuff they have come up with is pie in the sky useless non sense.

This would also require a TV with batteries, as power cut=no screen. How u gonna save then?

0W on idle? Then it's not idling, it's off ... *sigh*. Even in "off" it still uses at least 0.5 watts.

Using the battery as an in-built UPS makes sense, but otherwise, it's seriously bad news for eco-friendliness.

PC Gaming is getting back on it's feet. No point in getting a console for games.

As long as there are games on consoles that aren't on the PC, then there will always be a reason, no matter how well the PC is doing.

Japanese industries really going hard-eco after Fukushima and electricity shortage.

I won't be surprised to see it being able to feed upon solar batteries.

Aren't you using more power if the battery is dead and it needs charged while you're playing on the system?
