Damn... that's weiiiiiiiiiiiird... Does your motherboard have separate boot settings for P-ATA and S-ATA? Maybe you're telling it to boot from a P-ATA hard drive...

Any anyway... I thought S-ATA drives don't have master/slave jumpers?... Or am I just confused?

yes they dont have jumpers (SATA drives)
i had tried with my old Maxtor HDD also with it set as primary master but with the same result

and also my WDRaptorX with it set as the primary boot device
    wait a sec
could it be that maybe one of the sata pins or the ATAPI pins is missing or broken??
because the HDDs worked in my other mobo

    Not likely...

Booting from CDs works fine though right? Sounds more like a settings problem in that case...

I dont know how much this will assist you, but try installing the SATA drivers again, perhaps that might help.

Hooray, glad to hear you've got it working - no idea about the DVD-RW drive though, sorry...

Glad to hear it, except for the DVD driver of course :(

Just curious what was the solution, in case someone else comes across with this problem?

Did you check the jumpers on your cd drive? I usually just leave things on cable select to avoid problems.

Is the BIOS detecting the drive but windows isn't? Or is the BIOS even detecting it?
