Ok so i'm planning an upgrade depending on a raise ( :D ) . But the motherboard i look upon are only having either 3x PCIe 16x 2.0 and standard PCI or a PCIe 4x. I know they're supposed to be compatible but lets say i want to plug an audio card or expansion card (like the Asus USB 3.0 / SATA 6.0) that is Pcie x1 into an PCie 4x slot or a PCIe 4x card into an PCI 16x slot . Will that work ok?

If he plugged it in a x16 slot ,wouldnt his graphics card go down to x8?

he is plugging it into a separate port.

currently i have a pci-e x1 soundcard in a pci-e x16 port, there is no difference except that the device is lowered to x1 speed, of course.

BTW If you are planning on upgrading your pentium 4 setup, i'de suggest a core i5 750, good gigabyte, asus, DFI, or other good brand $150-ish(in USD, i dont know the price in your country) P55 board, some 4GB DDR3 and a ATI 5750...

though a core 2 duo and P45 would work.

Only if they are in SLI/crossover... I don't think anything except video cards support that though :p
