the main reason i went w/ oled was that i was replacing a vintage oled 1080p/60Hz that i've owned for almost ten years plus it allows me to convert the htpc into a dedicated mediaserver. swapping out the big old oled for a small 27" makes the den feel bigger too.

but yeah unless you have a specialized case a TV is just a better deal to game on and every top brand has VRR at much cheaper prices

Since we're talking about monitors, here's my last contribution to the monitor market.
After these, the OLED TV came, and I'm not going back to LCD, that's for sure.

Of all the PC hardware, during times of financial pressure, a monitor gives less bang for buck as far as performance goes.
You could buy a high end GPU or a new Mobo/CPU/RAM or a new case and custom loop, or a new monitor.

Color calibration on those looks all over the place :p
I would bleed at such sight lol.

On topic, displays are as we can see a personal preference more than a standard.

people buy more PCs because of Covid
    PCs become more expensive
people buy less PCs because they are expensive
    PCs become even more expensive
people buy even less PCs because they are expensive
sales drop and all the companies show the same tendency
    management still doesn't lower prices

Can't believe those people get paid for their "management".

Actually, looked at in front, they are very close in both brightness/contrast and color calibration.

But what you said is exactly what happens with LCD, all of them... you look at it a bit off axis, any calibration is basically thrown out the window.

    ---
But yea, back to topic... not only there's a general economy slowdown, really heading into recession, but also specific to monitors, the progress has been very, very slow, with only MOAR FRAMES being offered in the last 10 years or so.
Everything else basically stagnated, just tiny improvements to response times.

It's the limitation of technology... no matter how good the fabrication technology gets, all LCD's suffer from the same problem - the pixels are a filter of light, not a source of light, and that liquid crystal cannot instantly change orientation and opacity like a solid state light emitting diode...

I see that most of the people again durin pandemic refreshed the pc or bougth a second monitor and now of course, they don't need to buy all over again.
Those decline in yoy sale do not take in account that in 2020 and 2021 we had a boom of entertainment things to do home.

Prices, lack of innovation (besides OLED), still lots of LCD has 6bit screens, still lots of them are max 60hz, recession looming around corner, cost of living went like +50% year to year when u add all costs(fuels, power, food), and so one...
    So yeah, decline.

Uhm, who the hell would have a superwide monitor on 24/7 or stare at that much. Yea none of what you said makes sense at all. In fact, you can put the monitor in dual 16:9 mode or 21:9 and 11:9 picture in picture and have dual monitor setup with 1 monitor, 1 stand, and one super tiny line between them. As a former eyefinity user, ill take my superwide over triples any day of the week now. And I do alot of sim racing. And its easy as pie adding a 3rd monitor for eyefinity only using a 2nd one.

4k is terrible for gaming, well anything 16:9 these days. But my whole post I never talked about gaming. But ok........................ When you have 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 3840x1080, 3840x1200, 5120x1440, 5120x1600, and soon 7680x2160, zero excuse honeslty outside of consoles for 16:9 to exist.

Most business I do into are still using 5:4 monitors. Tons of hospitals do, and our project managers switching to ultrawides to get rid of their 2-3 monitor setups that take up tons of space. And low resolution.

Funny thing is right up until last year i was using a 43in 4k hdr tv for my pc gaming, then these insane lekky prices had me looking for a cheaper way, and i found a very nice 1080p 27in pc monitor that consumes 19 watts a hour, compared to the 43in 4k tv which was in the 110 watts a hour, and even more if you were using dynamic picture mode, and to be honest i have been very impressed with the pc monitor, gives way better vibrant colours and sharpness than the 4k tv i was using.

    OLED? What am I? Royalty?

Lately I'm using a $250 4k tv from Hisense and it's surprisingly good as a monitor. This 5700XT is also surprisingly more capable at 4K gaming than I anticipated.

Haha I am still waiting for my no-compromise 32" 4K 144Hz monitor for both gaming and productivity (photo editing).

Pricing on "gaming monitors" are really getting out of control. Currently on the Dell S2721DGF which is a fantastic performing 1440P 165Hz monitor which can be had for AUD $400 right now yet to move up to 32" 4K I have to pay exponentially more and still deal with compromises; and you wonder why sales are down.

LG can sell a 65" QLED mini LED TV with ~1000 local dimming zones for just shy of 2 grand here in Australia yet the cheapest 32GQ950 with only 32 zones I can find goes for $1700 like WTF.
