    Hi everyone.

I wanted to play Battlefield 1 but the game said i had to upgrade to lastest drivers (i had catalyst 15.. someting, i dont remember), I removed the driver first and then installed the crimson 16.8.3 driver, but after rebooting my PC and the desktop appeared, the screen started to blink and freeze showing the message "AMD controller stopped working" on the botton right corner. After blinking like 3-4 times the PC crashed showing a blue screen, it did the same every time I tried to reboot the computer. Then, in safe mode, I uninstalled the driver using DDU and tried the 16.7.3 driver, but the same happened even with the 15.7 driver. I tried the catalyst 14.12 and the same problem happened, now i can't install a driver because it crashes after reboot. is there any solution?

    My pc specs:

    - i5 3570K
    - r9 280x ASUS
    - Gygabite z77 udh5
    - win 7 ultimate 64 bits

    Everything is stock, nothing overclocked.

Have you tried using DDU in safe mode to do a clean install of the newer driver?

Something tells me your video card has developed issues, and the timing of the driver installation is coincidental. But do keep us posted. Weirder things have happened, like a PSU failure can't be ruled out completely. Can you provide the BSOD dumps?

Also, is your asus 280x a TOP model? Some with 1.6V on vram (and naked ICs) can become quite unstable under certain situations, even on desktop. IIRC there was a bios update. Still, it'd be strange if you only noticed by now.

Google BSOD Viewer. Even a screenshot of the BSOD from the viewer wil suffice.

I agree with this......We se this all the time with cards starting to fail after updating drivers....but its just coincidence in some cases. Trying lowering your boost clock 20mhz and see if it clears up. This game in dx12 pushes much harder than bf4 per same clock speed.

If there's an overclock on the CPU or GPU, quite often newer drivers can trigger issues that were always present previously just that the newer drivers utilise the card in a more efficient manner such to expose them. Also issues can develop over time if you use the typical 'maximum overclock' suggestions online rather than finding the peak overclock, then working out 80 percent of the difference between stock and that overclock and using that as a maximum.

I was having similar issues with previous drivers. I'm still on 16.5.2 I think because everything past it causes me to BSOD during games. DDU didn't help either. No OC on the GPu as well. And the crashes were happening in DX11.

I don't know if this will work with a 290X, but it worked with my R9 Nano.
Power down your PC. Uninstall the graphics card to allow it to discharge for 15 minutes or so. While the card is out. Use alternate graphics output and uninstall all graphics card related software. e.g. drivers, monitoring and overclock utilities etc.
reinstall the card and try installing newer drivers.
I found that setting registers would sometimes freeze and this was the only way that they would clear.
    Why? I do not know.

Same problem, I have a 280x as well. 16.8.3 is actually a huge improvement over 16.8.2 for me. Before I couldn't go 10 minutes without crashing. Opening Chrome or GPU-Z was likely to cause a BSOD.

I did a fresh reinstall of Windows 10 Version 1607 14393.103 with secure boot disabled then immediately updated to build 14393.105 That helped significantly, but there are still VIDEO TDR FAILURE AMD kernel BSODs on boot as well as system crashes.

And you can use WinAero Tweaker to give you a simple right click menu > Install option for CAB files. (As well as disabling windows defender and fixing everything else wrong with W10)

I HIGHLY recommend you do a reinstall, and so does Microsoft!
Before you do though, unplug all other storage drives and format the main HDD/SSD you're installing on with diskpart, making sure to run a CLEAN ALL, and convert the drive to GPT.

Install in PURE UEFI MODE. That means disable CSM entirely!
When you create the windows installer from the ISO using RUFUS, ensure you do it in GPT+UEFI mode as well. NTFS or FAT32 does not matter, I used NTFS and it worked fine.

Prior to all this I had to extract my 280x bios with GPU-Z and enable the UEFI partition. If you're lucky your GPU will have a UEFI/GOP bios available on Techpowerup so you don't have to mod.
If you do, well... good luck.

I used the HD7XX UEFI Patch Tool Beta.

Use Atiflash 2.7.4 to flash the BIOS. If you use Powershell read any errors carefully, I had to add ./ before the command and put the path in quotes for it to work.

After all that I still get VIDEO TDR FAILURE even when underclocked. Thermal paste has been changed to Thermal Grizzly Kryonaught, the best non liquid metal paste available (screw arctic silver! Old trash). There are copper shims instead of thermal pads contacting with the VRMs and memory, I've upgraded the fans to the ones from a 970 and they spin FAST!!!! The god damn thing has been lapped for crying out loud! :bang:

    Nothing helps.

Oh. Except running Windows 8.1 in legacy mode. No TDRs there! :3eyes:

1st reinstalling windows lol is the LAST thing you ever want to do. Uninstalling the drivers... sure cant hurt and how you do it does not matter

Be nice if you had another system to test it on.. or friends. Try putting it in another slot PICE.

Cant you do a SYSTEM RESTORE to the day before something like that?

i use bluescreenview to view bsods. free easy to use
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

also i was suffering bsods for weeks. even after uninstalling any monitoring or stuff like msi afterburner. but my issue turned out to be i was using driver sweeper (didnt realize it was not supported anymore) but i did a full uninstall of all radeon stuff went into safe mode then used ddu. turned out somewhere was a missed bad file causing everything. only reason i figured it out was cause i missed going into safe mode and windows was blown up like 100x 100 an icon was damn near the size of my screen. got into safe mode used ddu and havent had one single issue since. oh and yes win 10

also to let some know. i have 10 pro and win 10 even thou it was turned off loved downgrading my video drivers to a 6 month old one(even while in game) i had to talk to microsoft and argue with them for 45 min to turn the auto driver installs off. person actually had to ASK A SUPERVISIOR to make sure it was ok. anyways thats what i think started screwing up the files. for those that want to turn it off they went into regedit....hkeylocalmachine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/driversearching/driverupdates..... then they turned it off.

    DDU already does that:
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching]
    "SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000

It prevents Windows from searching WU when you don't have a driver for a device, such as when you run DDU and boot for the first time or via search by Device Manager. But it doesn't keep a driver update from popping in WU, where you must hide it before letting WU run.

Under Pro, this same policy can be set via:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Device Installation\Specify search order for device driver source locations\Enabled|Do not search Windows Update , but it helps to have Windows WU set to Notify before download via Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Configure Automatic Updates\Enabled|2 , so you can hide the offending driver updates (with Windows Update MiniTool or MS's own hide tool).

yes that turns off searching wu. i had that off before windows always turned it back on.
you miss understand. the one i posted turns off updating any drivers period. so lets say you go from amd to nvidea. all windows will does is a generic driver instead of an actual nvidea one. you are in charge completely what drivers you put on.
also i dont know about alot of people but windows likes to change crap you turn off. so far it updated to anniversary and the setting they did in regdit that i posted stayed off.

Could you then export and paste your registry entry then, please? Just right click the "DriverSearching" folder on regedit, and export a .reg file to paste contents (as I did in the post above).

There's a new policy that should prevent any driver updates at:
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Do not include drivers with Windows Update\Enabled
But this was only introduced in AU, and many people report it doesn't work. So if you had a setting done before the upgrade, it must be something else.
