Overheating CPU affect game performance?

Unfortunately, I had trouble getting the Arctic Cooling cooler on so I shoved the crappy Intel cooler on.
I'm warned of high CPU temperatures in the BIOS when it hits 70c+.

My question is, can CPU overheating affect game performance? Alot of my games are getting low FPS and stuttering during play.

Only if it reaches 105c at which point it starts throttling. 70-80c is above average temp (for non-OC'd chips), but perfectly safe and no performance penalty at all.

 

Ah right cheers. Something else must be causing all this low FPS and stuttering then, god knows what

 

Run cpuz and game for a bit, then report back with your maximum recorded cpu temp.

 

CPU-Z doesn't record temperatures, do you mean HWMonitor instead?

As for throttling, it depends on your UEFI settings, but normally 105C is the absolute maximum before the CPU throttles to save itself before it burns out.

Now I'm struggling to get into Windows. Windows startup has slowed down to crawl. Been crashing randomly as well.

 

Why did you buy that PSU when everyone advised against it?

Same unit on OCUK uke2: is called an "OCUK Battle 750W". The 12v rail supplies a measly 34A (400W) max. For comparison my midrange 750W AcBel has 56A (672W) 12v output and the 700W AcBel in my other rig has a 52A 12v.

OCUK give it 5 star rating which is pretty funny since out of 5 reviews 2 say it blew up:

Sounds like it isn't really a heating issue but a underperforming PSU.

Throttling occurs when the system isn't getting enough power to run at full speed.

Yes, above 70c and performance will start to diminish, when you get towards the 80s and beyond you'll get stuttering.

 

It was a mistake. Completely forgot about changing it

Now, the computer is booting up fine. No BSoD.
But, games are still running choppy.

750w with 34A is pretty bad.

This is better and less expensive: XFX 550W £53. If you want to step it up from that, get the 650W semi-modular version: XFX 650W XXX £75. It's by no means necessary though, the 550W unit is more than adequate for your system. You could run 7950 crossfire off of the 650W unit.

Hope so. Even if it turns out not to be the cause, it's good that you replace your low grade unit with a trustworthy one.

 

^ agreed, best to get your current PSU out of your system now... it will save you from issues as it gets older\stressed.

Any way you can test with another PSU before buying another, just to confirm?

God damn it. I've been using the computer for watching movies and surfing the internet. Out of no where now, my sound has stopped working. What the ****? A faulty PSU couldn't fry individual parts of a system, right!? :banana::bang:
Theres still High Definition Audio device listed on the Hardware Manager.
Any troubleshooting advice to find out whats going on?
