Overclock I7 6700K Problem

    I tried to overclock a liquid-cooled I7 6700K on an MSI Z170A Krait gaming X3, updated to the latest bios, making these attempts in the settings:

    OC Explore Mode: expert mode
    CPU Ratio Apply Mode: all core
    CPU Ratio: 46
    CPU Ratio mode: Dynamic Mode / Fixed Mode
    Ring Ratio: Auto
    EIST: Enabled / Disabled
    Intel Turbo Boost: Enabled / Disabled
    CPU Core Voltage: 1.35v / 1.40v
    I also tried disabling these features: Intel Adaptive Thermal Monitor and Intel C-State

    I tried with Linx, prime 95 and IBT and with all the behavior is always the same: after a couple of minutes the multiplier goes down to 44 and the frequency to 4400MHz, continuing the test at this fixed frequency.
    Temperatures are always good.

    Do you know if it is normal or is there something that causes this abnormal behavior?

    You cant set enabled and disabled etc. at the same time. Are you saying you tried both?
    Good temps has no meaning.

    Are you sure your chip is a K version?

    You're hitting a limiting factor, likely an AVX -2 offset, check your BIOS. I could also be some power limiter kicking in after a 2 mins boost, but the AVX offset setting is far more likely.

    I dont think AVX offset came in until after Z170 mobos.
    My Maximus VIII Hero Z170 doesnt have it.

    Skylake has no AVX offset, it began with Kaby Lake (on 100 series too with updated BIOS).

    It sounds like something is throttling - have you disabled all power limits (PL1, PL2, PL3) and current limit (ICCMax)?

    You can use Intel XTU, Throttlestop or HwInfo64 to check for throttling.

    Yes, I'm sayng tried both.
    Temps under 80°, also with 1.4v
    CPU K version

    I dont see any AVX setting in Bios.

    Unfortunately I can't check throttoling right now, I will do it as soon as possible.

    These are the main entries in the BIOS related to the CPU, including the "CPU Futures":



    CPU Ratio Mode [Dynamic Mode]*
    Selects the CPU Ratio operating mode. This item will appear when you set the CPU ratio manually.
    [Fixed Mode]
    [Dynamic Mode]
    Ring Ratio [Auto]
    Sets the ring ratio. The valid value range depends on the installed CPU.
    Adjusted Ring Frequency
    Shows the adjusted Ring frequency. Read-only.
    GT Ratio [Auto]
    Sets the integrated graphics ratio. The valid value range depends on the installed CPU.
    Adjusted GT Frequency
    Shows the adjusted integrated graphics frequency. Read-only.
    Misc Setting*
    Press Enter, + or - key to open or close the following 3 items related to CPU features.
    EIST [Enabled]*
    Enables or disables the Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep Technology.
    Intel Turbo Boost [Enabled]*
    Enables or disables the Intel® Turbo Boost. This item appears when the installed CPU supports this function.
    [Enabled] Enables this function to boost CPU performance automatically above rated specifications when system request the highest performance state.
    Enhanced Turbo [Auto]
    Enables or disables Enhanced Turbo function for all CPU cores to boost CPU performance.
    [Auto] [Enabled] [Disabled]
    This setting will be configured automatically by BIOS.
    All CPU cores would be increased to maximum turbo ratio.
    Disables this function.
    CPU Core/ GT Voltage Mode [Auto]*
    Selects the control mode for CPU Core/ GT voltages.
    [Auto]
    [Adaptive Mode] [Override Mode] [Offset Mode][Adaptive + Offset ] [Override + Offset ]
    CPU Voltages control [Auto]
    These options allows you to set the voltages related to CPU. If set to Auto, BIOS will set these voltages automatically or you can set it manually.




    CPU Features
    Press <Enter> to enter the sub-menu.

    This is the default setting ( i tried DISABLED only Intel Adaptive Thermal Monitor and Intel C-State

    Intel VT-D Tech [Disabled]
    Enables or disables Intel VT-D (Intel Virtualization for Directed I/O) technology.
    Hardware Prefetcher [Enabled]
    Enables or disables the hardware prefetcher (MLC Streamer prefetcher).
    Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch [Enabled]
    Enables or disables the CPU hardware prefetcher (MLC Spatial prefetcher).
    CPU AES Instructions [Enabled]
    Enables or disables the CPU AES (Advanced Encryption Standard-New
    Instructions) support. This item appears when a CPU supports this function.
    Intel Adaptive Thermal Monitor [Enabled]
    Enables or disables the Intel adaptive thermal monitor function to protect the CPU from overheating.
    [Enabled] Throttles down the CPU core clock speed when the CPU is over the adaptive temperature.
    Intel C-State [Auto]
    Enables or disables the Intel C-state. C-state is a processor power management technology defined by ACPI.
    C1E Support [Disabled]
    Enables or disables the C1E function for power-saving in halt state. This item appears when Intel C-State is enabled.
    Package C State limit [Auto]
    This item allows you to select a CPU C-state level for power-saving when system is idle. The options of C-state depend on the installed CPU. This item appears when Intel C-State is enabled.
    CFG Lock [Enabled]
    Lock or un-lock the MSR 0xE2[15], CFG lock bit.
    Long Duration Power Limit (W) [Auto]
    Sets the long duration TDP power limit for CPU in Turbo Boost mode.
    Long Duration Maintained (s) [Auto]
    Sets the maintaining time for Long duration power Limit(W).
    Short Duration Power Limit (W) [Auto]
    Sets the short duration TDP power limit for CPU in Turbo Boost mode.
    CPU Current Limit (A) [Auto]
    Sets maximum current limit of CPU package in Turbo Boost mode. When the current is over the specified value, the CPU will automatically reduce the core frequency for reducing the current.
    FCLK Frequency [Auto]
    Sets FCLK frequency. Lower FCLK frequency may help you to set higher base clock frequency.
    DMI Link Speed [Auto]
    Sets DMI speed

    Long Duration Power Limit (W) [Auto] = PL1
    Short Duration Power Limit (W) [Auto]

    Set these to disabled or maximum value in BIOS and retest if the CPU still downclocks.
