OpenGL is the industry choice for cross platform, hardware accelerated 3D graphics, and it is also the only way you can get fast 3D graphics on your Linux desktop. It now seems Windows Vista implements OpenGL via Direct3D, seriously degrading its performance and attractiveness to developers." From the article: "In practice this means for OpenGL under Aeroglass: OpenGL performance will be significantly reduced - perhaps as much as 50%, OpenGL on Windows will be fixed at a vanilla version of OpenGL 1.4, No extensions will be possible to expose future hardware innovations. It would be technically straightforward to provide an OpenGL ICD within the full Aeroglass experience without compromising the stability or the security of the operating system. Layering OpenGL over Direct3D is a policy more than a technical decision.

That sucks, alot of good games use the opengl engine.

Why couldn't they atleast impliment opengl 2 into dx10 or whatever? I mean 1.4.. jeesh

And this is a rumour it hasnt been confirmed by Microsoft so dont Microsoft bash yet it may turn out to be untrue , or at least not as bad as suggested. Seems to be a little harsh even for microsoft

They are trying to put OpenGL out of the way?
That is just so stupid. OpenGL is not only the API choice of alot of companies, but also for technologycal advancement. Its easier for them to make new stuff on it because of its open source nature.
IF that is true, that would leave M$ out of the 3D graphics making market.

NOt exactly put it out of the way , just cripple it so developers will have to use DX.

On another point , the PS3 titles are using a special Version of OpenGL 2.0 , if it is true we might not be seeing as many console ports. (Which depending on your opinion on ports , could be a good or bad thing)

That would be really annoying. This would mean that if you want to play an OpenGL game that you'll have to dual boot linux and Vista, and reboot back and forth between the 2 when switching from dx to ogl and from ogl back to dx.

I hate M$ - direct3d is crap compared to openGL.

Somthing else must be happening and it might got lost in translation...
Of course then again... Vista's GUI is supposed to be accelerated on DX isn't it?
So this might not be so bull after all.
    F***.

This will be bad for games like UT2004, Doom 3, Co Riddick or CoD. :( What about Quake 4? Will it be using OpenGL? ID used OpenGL ever since Quake 2, so this would be a major blow for all OGL games.

    Screw you M$! :cussing:
