That's bad dude, how much did you felt it in your area? Any damage on your house/appartment? edit Ouch, shakes are constant in the middle of NZ, I'm watching @ geonet.org.nz and it reports shakes every few minutes in past 2 hours and so, never below magnitude 2.7, on average between 3.x and 4.x, what a bad way to start an early monday morning Hope everything is OK there guys, iirc here at G3D we have more than few members from NZ. Take care guys...
Thanks gurus, Everything is still pretty shaky atm. Damage around the country will be better assessed now that its daylight.
Do earthquakes of this magnitude happen often in NZ? I mean, a 7.5 would pretty much obliterate everything here. I could definitely see 3 colors on the sky in that video, blue, red and green. Pretty crazy!
Huge. On the large side of 'huge', actually. I hope your building codes are up to the task. Whishing you all well. I have relatives on the east side of AUS. Wishing them well as well.
Hey all, just had a 6.3 here as of 45 mins ago. Swung like being on a baot, really threw the ol equilibrium off that i wasn't even sure if it was an earthquake at first. Aftershocks ranging from 3~ up to 5.5~ happening every few minute Still waiting to see the damage of the ground zero area (South Island - Kaikoura), the 7.8 hit just after midnight, but we still have no information about the area 14 hours~ later. Bit strange and concerning. And when I ask questions on the live news feed, they dont reply.
I really like NZ, hope to visit or live there one day. Take care NZ people. Btw 7.4 sounds a lot, is that on Richtar scale or another?
It's sad that cows are stranded, but I'm more concerned for the people. At least this isn't in a "third world" nation, so there should be infrastructure in place to try to rebuild. From what little I know of NZ, it's a rugged landscape so I wonder if the biggest difficulty is just reaching the areas most affected?
