Just recently stumbled across this article that directly compares the GTX 480 to the HD5870 across a variety of games. A lot of the tests showed not only the average frame rates, but minimums as well. I was quite surprised, given the fact that there's quite a few people that swear Nvidia's products have higher minimum framerates.

Never heard that but i heard that endless Red vs Green gets boring. Sometimes i think people spend more time in comparing their card than actually using and enjoying it.

There were quite many other games tested where GTX480 was the winer.

We have seen it years ago that performance results in one game are not the absolute truth, it's about performance in dfferent games. Drivers matter very much. We have seen Nvidia and ATI optimized games where other card can destroy the other one and then stuation is completely opposite in some other game.

You didn't look at the review, did you.

Even in games that's optimized for Nvidia, ( like FarCry 2, for example ) the HD5870's minimum framerates were within a relative min/avg/max ratio compared to the GTX 480.

Using the FarCry 2 bench as reference.

    HD5870 8xAA
Max fps to average fps - ~44.2% difference
Average fps to minimum fps - ~33% difference

    GTX480 8xAA
Max fps to average fps - ~46.6% difference
Average fps to minimum fps - ~33% difference

According to the article, even in the tests where the GTX 480 rolls the HD5870, the differences between the HD5870's minimum to average to maximum framerates are similar to the GTX480's at 1920x1200.

    I did.

Are we talking about percentages or just frames per second as a raw number ?

Both. I'm talking about the difference in percentage between the HD5870's average and minimum FPS compared to the GTX 480, as well as the general performance of both cards.

Why do you bring up the percentage here lol, sounds like a market ploy.

3 min fps vs 10 average is the same as 30 vs 100 averge, but what will be more smooth here ye :)?

More min is always more min doesn't matter that they "scale" the same.

From what I seen over the course of 5-6 months of diffrent reviews and peoples benches nvidia seem to have a slight lead in min fps where ati has a lead in max fps.

More benches including the min fps would be good since I feel thats what matters the most.
